I am a beginner (just started taking lessons) and I will soon need to make the decision: what will my first kite be? After consulting with my trainer, we determined that I will need a 12m all-arounder to meet requirements for the local wind conditions, my weight etc. I have read A LOT of reviews, both magazine reviews and forums, from real users, and my two finalists are:

- Wainman Boss (of Rabbit Gang 2.0).
- Mutiny F series.

Both of these will cost me around US $1850.
The X-factor is a 2012 Cabrinha Vector which I could buy for $850, so less than half of the other two!!
I would consult my trainer, too, but he is not a distributor of either of these two brands, so he will try to sell his kites.
My question to you is: which one of my two finalists you choose? Or would you get the Vector for less than 1/2 of the price??

P.S. My semifinalists were the Ozone Catalyst, North Fuse, and the Cabrinha Switchblade, in no particular order.

Being an absolute beginner I would go for the cheaper option, your gonna give your kite a hard time over the first few months and you won't really have the skills to know the difference between kites or where you want to end up ie freestyle free ride or just dog style
Down the track you can more appreciate the differences between kites and demo something that will more suit the style of riding your going for, then it's worth spending the extra coin.

^^^ You won't get better advice than that....
Go the Vector for sure, great all round beginners kite with good resale value, as long as you don't trash it too much

Don't pay too much for your first kite, so go the Vector. There may well be plenty of brand new but old stock 2012 kites around for less than a grand. If I had a choice for good all round kite, I'd go a Naish Park.
