Can anyone help to explain the difference between High/medium/low aspect ratio!!!! i've been told that the higher the aspect, the higher the kite will fly in the window!!! and then i've also been told that the aspect ratio relates to the speed of the kite!!!!

at present i've got a 10m Naish Aero (which i'm told is low to medium aspect) and an old Cabrinha black tip 9.4 (told this is a high aspect!!) i find that i keep luffing the black tip where as i've never luffed the Aero!!!!! is this just my lack of flying skills???or is it partly down to the aspect ratio????? can anybody help?????

i'm thinking of buying the 16m RRD off this site, this is a high aspect kite, should i stick to medium aspect until i have more experience???? or just go for it!!!

Well Dicko, High Aspect kites are the top performance kites available they offer very high upwind ability, the reason why is because they sit further forward in the window and Higher. This also allows for much larger jumps. But with the higher performance comes a cost, they are not as stable as the lower aspect kites and don't re-launch as easily. They are quite a bit more twitchy. This is why you sometimes luff your Black tip. Most probably in gusty condtion when the kite accelerates forward in a gust and then when the gust stops the kite falls. Advise on that one is run backwards or work the kite in figure 8 at the top of the window and this will stop that. Saying that a higher aspect ratio kite turns faster is a little bit miss leading. They will move faster across the window but that is not exactly turning speed.

Some of the mid aspect kites will turn faster than the high aspect ratio kites out there, But take longer to get from one side of the window they just turn differently. They pivet alot more on there wing tips. They offer alot more stabilty because the sit abit further back in the window and don't respond to the gusts as much. They don't boost as big but offer alot of hang time. They also won't go upwind as well. Mid Aspect kites are great. You need to figure out the style of riding that suits you best and go for it.

Hope this helps feed back from other people would be good too.

Cheers Killer
