Can anybody give me some advice on final coating on a board?

Made mine from carbon fibre and top layer Kevlar but now want to tranfer an image onto the board.
I'm told that there is a special paper - a bit like tissue paper you can print on to and then place on the board and epoxy resin over. Has anybody heard of it? Tried stacks of copy places and a few printers and best I can find so far is a transfer (like for T shirts) and polyprop & acetate which I dont think will stick unless roughened up which will of course effect the image.
I'm told that the last layer should be a UV protected 2 pac epoxy to protect the image - Any thoughts?

I believe its called rice paper, dont know where to get from tho. Where I work we use clear plastic film, each sheet has a piece of really thin light tissue paper on it to protect it which just gets thrown out, I reckon its the same stuff, pretty big sheets too. Would probably work, can get some if you have no luck.

Thanks Shannon. The plastic sheets you use do you know what type they are and how do you apply them? I'm getting picky I know but do you know what sort of ink has been applied to them? Do you just wet the board with epoxy then epoxy over them? Wouldn't they peel off if they are too smooth and shiney?

Cheers.

Oops I think I got you confused. Not the plastic sheet itself but the thin paper between each sheet, we just chuck it in the bin. It sounds similar to that rice paper stuff. Its real thin like tissue paper. (The plastic film is too thick and shiny). Hope thats easier to understand.

a few options.

use rice paper and print onto it (you can get it from surfboard manufactures suppliers, Len dibben, colin earl?)Normal to glass this under a 2-4oz glass sheet for protection. this is a light weight option but can have strength problems in the laminate

Get a fine weave 3/4 oz glass cut into what ever sheet size you want (A4 A3)tape up the edges this can be run thru a colar printer no problems. then glass this onto your board again probally pay to glass this in the laminate.

Use 100% cotten and get it screen printed. I have used cotten prints from fabric shop as a final skin with no problems. It will glass up a bit textured which is a good thing on the deck as it will allow easy gripping for all those GAY board off moves that all of us can do but choose not to do but proceed to take the piss out of...

paint your board eat heeaps of smarties and drink a few gallons of coke and hit it with an airbrush.

Get your imgae cut into vinyal sticjers and just stick onto the board

what ever you do you will ahve the dark carbon colour underlying

have fun

The plastic film stuff Im talking about is called C42 from graphics suppliers but you wouldnt want to buy it just for the scrap paper., It comes in huge boxes. Id go with Shanes advice and ask for rice paper at a surfboard manufacturer. You not in Perth? How much do you need? Maybe try art / craft suppliers? Vinyl stickers are cheap and look sic too.

Let us know how you go mate

Have heard that some guys been using polyester resin as final top coat on epoxy laminates for UV protection, dont know if this works so well, cause one of my early windsurfer baords the polyester on epoxy thing never went off, endless fun scraping the crap off....

Yeah I'm told you cant put poly over a 2 pack epoxy. I'm gonna experiment with some 2 packs over 1 pack (think flat may absorb the 2 pack coat) artwork on some scrap.
If anyone finds a 1 pack UV protective clear spray can let me know because as far as I can see they dont exist to my surprise.

there is a PU (I think) sealing resin that can be used over epoxy with no problems, cant remeber the name get in touch with KIRKSIDE fibre glass supplier here in Prth. Its used for a UV protection on Decking/wood but can be used over epoxy. pretty expensive as you can only get it in large quantities.

I dont worry to much about UV protection for my boards, designs change and i tend to build a new one every 6 months to a year anyway and sure the resin gets a bit yella but dosnt seem to affect strength.

Paint is the ultimate UV protector.

Hoots, I make Bluejuice sailboards and also have a vinyl signmaking business You can get acid free tissue paper from Jacksons 10cents/sheet and run it through a inkjet printer or silk screen it with indian ink then laminate between layers of glass as shunter says, or you can get your image digitally printed onto some sticky backed vinyl but this is very expensive. Or I can cut you a logo out of vinyl stick onto your board and cover with a thin layer of epoxy I have seen a clear spray can that can be used over vinyl not sure of price, other clear sprays affect the vinyl.

I make skateboards and I have been using Anchor Laquer clear over the top of the paint and over vinyl computer cut stickers. No problems with the stickers, although Anchor Laquer is so friggin hard when it sets fully that it cracks from the flexing (very fine cracks, you can barely see them) I put about six coats of clear over it so that's probably the problem.
Anchor is about $10 a can from Ross's Salvage in freo.
Hey Bluejuice, I might have to hit you up for some stickers, can you beat $6.00 a pop for two colours?
