I bought mine new for $50 from Goodtimes at the Gabba, so you should be able to find some at any surf shop. They seem to work fine for a board, but I haven't tried them with 2 mast pieces. Probably not that great for that.

Hi Mike

I used soft racks (from goodtime) for over 3 years, they are ok, however they have a few issues,

1) you have to take them off when not using other wise if it rains the water is soaked along the strap and drips off the strap inside the car. Plus they look pretty ordinary.
2) you cant really load them up much other wise it presses down on your roof and can dent/scratch the roof of your car.
3) masts need to be in a bag other wise they rub on the paint work and ruin it. thats if you tie the mast down beside your board.
4) they are a pain to put on and off the car.

That all said, they are cheap for under $100 and allows you to go sailing in a small car. Personally I would suggest getting some proper racks, I paid about $250 for brand new Rhino Sports racks.

just my two cents

i had some about 5yrs ago..they are not that good, i seem to remember boards wobbling around, straps hanging everywear, damage to the car interior, rain coming through windows!

go the waggon.

Hi all. I'm a yank, new to this board. I have this Riverside rack
http://www.islandsports.com/Itemdesc.asp?product=Kayak+Carrier+Kit&ic=127962&eq=&Tp=
which I bought with a lot of used items and haven't used on the car. However, since the rack I have been using for more than a decade needs to be seriously altered to carry a wide board, I'm thinking about using this when I pick up a new board. I'm wondering if this might be similar to your soft rack.

I had one of those soft racks. Lost a kayak on the Interstate once! Make sure you do a loop around your board/kayak as well as around the roof. I just went over the top of the kayak and around the roof. The kayak started to move sideways, I hit the brakes and kayak came flying down the bonet of the car and skid to a holt just off the side of the Interstate. Good thing it was early morning and not much traffic around.

I agree with previous comments about getting a proper roof rack. You dont want to put $2000 worth of gear on a $50 roof rack.

Cheers

Just buy a van. Only loosers care about the looks of a car.

Realistically it is a device to get you from A to B. Get a practical car rather than a "trendy" one or you will be throwing away your money.

Chicks don't get turned on by cars, they get turned on by windsurfers. I find it hard now to get to the water because of all the groupies.

Get the most beaten up van you can find. Cheap as chips and cooler than a hotted up whipper snipper motored excel or gemini

Go to cash converters, I picked up a roof rack there for $20 I think.

Small cars doesn't necessarily mean no windsurfing, I'd stay clear of the soft racks though. Plenty of horror stories floating around the windsurfing forums about boards coming loose

If you dont get a wagon or a van get a hatch back, almost as good!
I can fit two boards 3 sails, 2 masts, a boom and everything else in mine. You just have to lay the seats down, not that good for passengers however.

Soft racks are good but as people have said they do scratch roofs and they are really annoying to fit every time you go for a sail, you would be best off getting a decent pair of streamlined roof racks if you want that fullly siiiiccckkk look on your new wheels and chicks really do get turned on by big exhaust it makes em go crazzzy, so get the biggest you can afford (dont worry if it fits or not)

Sorry, I meant to reply here and posted a new topic. Vans have too much wind resistance and can consume more gasoline. I also don't like the reduced visibility compared to a sedan or wagon.

ah Junior, getting ready to hit the world, lock up your daughters folks, dang, that means me too!

I say bring back the panno, I had a HZ panno in the eighties, 253 V8 4 speed, what I would do to have that sweet set of wheels now, lived in it for 1 month with my girlfriend back then.

Im thinking a 63 ford station wagon would be the goods, or a valiant safari wagon.

all I can say Greenleader is "Aus liebe zum automobil"

actually I think when I sold my panno, Aussie crawl "sons of beaches" cassette tape was jammed in the player.

Hatch backs are the go if you are too cool to drive a van. My old excel would fit:
- 3 guys
- 3 boards on the roof
- 9 sails inside
- plus a lot of asorted other junk that seems to go on every sailing trip.

Cheap to run to

Get softracks if you want to see your gear fly into the distance in your rear vision mirror.

Stop being a tosser and buy a cheap windsurfing-friendly car. Ideally a van.

Junior, my bet is that you're going to have serious problems.

Go the Hyundai Getz.
They fit 3 boards(2 easy),3 sails, mast and boom inside and thats before you put anything on the roof.
They use about 6-7 liters per 100kms and go pretty good for a 1.5 liter.
I had a v8 commodore ute before this and a Subaru forrester gt. Both good cars but the getz is best for a sailor.
A van would be good but they are a pain to park, bad visibility and use more fuel.
GO THE GETZ

hey if you ask me i reckon dis is the best way to go if u got a lot of gear and still want a really nice car that looks great (not that important i dun think).

Check out these pics:
- http://www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=2661

This even has roof racks ontop of the trailer. Theres more pics to look at on one of those links.

Still if i was buying a car (not that i will be fora long time) i would get eitha a ute, station wagon or an old panel van.

at the moment my dad, bro and i carry all our gear on out ute which we built roof racks for that just slide in and out of the side of the tray painlessly. All boards go on the roof racks (can fit 4) and then all gear, sails, booms and everything go in the tray of the ute. We also gota dual cab ute, so we can still carry 5 people round if needed.

P.S: Crewman utes arnt the way to go i heard from a few people. to smaller cab. Just go somethin standered like Rodeo, Hilux, Courier, Triton something like dat.

I don't think Sex and Getz would ever be in the same sentence but really I don't think junior would really mind where it was!!!!

boy you act like the panno is gone.....
mate get yourself a falcon XF or XD panno these are only around 16 to 20 odd years old and are reasonably cheap.Parts easy.or there is the more recent Xg i think only around 10 years old.
When I got mine [4 years ago] it was the only near current model traditional panel van shape that was available of the original surf van style.Mine's just had a new engine in it so it will go for many more years.
I can fit an actual longboard [320cm] in the rear over the passenger seat...sleep in it,and who knows what else.
The car I used before this was a Sunbeam Rapier coupe and before this was a 1958 Wolsely 1500 {morris major look a like]I carried my boards on top and layed the back seat down and slept with my legs in the boot.
In the 70/80/90s I used to van in a Morris Minor Panel van so if its not a vintage car or a true panno its not cool anyway. And I still have a goggomobil panel van and just sold my 3 wheeled Reliant panel van.

jap sedans dont cut it.

but if you like sedans I've got a morris minor for sale right now or maybe a goggomobil sedan....
that' be a good one for ya.. G.O.G.G.O

Im mikes brother, I own a van, and we put all our windsurfing gear in it...
its horrible to drive, no fun at all.

Im pretty sure he said he wanted something that 'went alright'
That means NOT a van...in any form...

Because its not just about getting from A to B, its getting there as quikly as possible

Just buy any decent car, then get a tow bar fitted...
and get a trailer...
and if you really care about looks, get one of the towbars that allow you to slide the end section off so it looks like you dont have a towbar..

I dont know why I have to be on the internet to tell you this, I could just run across to your room and yell at you

I've driven a van (from Syd) to WA and back, down to Tassie and back, QLD and back, and 1 billion times up and down the nsw coast.
They're fine to drive. And my van is very basic. stop complaining girls!

you think a van is a hassle to drive but you're willing to tow some hunk of sh1t trailor all over the place?? crikey! you're asking for trouble.
