gday,
just wondering if I could grab a couple of tips concerning riding unhooked.
When I do unhook, I pretty much get pulled off my edge and start heading downwind making it pretty difficult to edge hard and do any wake-orientated tricks. I find that keeping the bar closer to my body helps but still can not maintain my edge.
Is this a kite size problem?? I handle the kite comfortably when hooked in so not not sure whether its really the problem. I have no problem getting pop when hooked in.
Has it got anything to do with tension in the lines??
Any help would be appreciated.
cheers

If your using a stock standard 4 lines/chickenloop bar.

You need to de-power your kite just as your going to unhook....

As you unhook keep your legs bent and try your very best to get the bar toward your hips....

Not easy I know, but do-able if you keep going with it....

The reason your being pulled off your edge and down wind is realy simple....

Your too extended, you need to make your self smaller/lower center of gravity. Use the power in your legs, not your arms or back to over come the power of the kite.

Dan the kite or the board is not the problem, it's technique....

If you've never dropped your kite, your not trying hard enough !

I have just discovered the pully bar and im impressed.
I demoed a pully bar on the weekend and when you unhook its all good, the tension dosent change all that much. Have tried unhooking on normal set up and have the same prob as dan, get pulled of edge. After trying a pully on the weekend i have now ordered one and can see it becoming more used than my normal set up with chicken loop. Alot of the advanced tricks need to be done unhooked, on normal setup you have to depower before you unhook then power on again when you hook in.

Go the pully.

Hey Dan! Hows life? It sounds like your kite might be flaring out when you unhook creating too much power. This happens because when you unhook, your chicken loop which is normally pulled away from the bar is now resting on the bar giving your front lines extra length. We found that if you shorten your chicken loop a little it stops this from happening so much. Or if you are unsure of doing that, depowering your kite just before you unhook is an option. Next time you go for a kite take note of how your kite looks when you unhook to see if it is flaring out to much.....if it isnt then there may be another problem like your technique which was also talked about above.

Hi Dan, I know you got that Wipika bar, so you need to set one of your stoppas about 5" from the bar so when you unhook your kite profile stays roughly the same. If your kite has too much back line tension your kite will flare and sit further back in the window( ala med aspect style) making it more difficult for you to stay upwind and keep your edge....Not impossible but thats where the technique comes in! I ride a wipika pulley bar and have a fair bit of tension on my back lines...still flying upwind and maximum pop when i need it.....Practice.... suggestion 2...Set that Wipika bar as a fixed line...good luck..PS. If I see you again at woodies i'll give you a shot on the pulley.
