I am wanting to start kitesurfing, and i have done a lesson with ian young.I have been recommended to get a 5m flysurfer maniac kite
i would like to know...
what conditions would be best to be able to use the kite? I.E what wind strength? what wind direction? etc

would i be able to use it at preston beach (half hour south from mandurah)? as there aren't many people there.

well if u r gonna be by urself i wouldnt reccomend a foil cos u cant land the succers without someone catchin em. i have watched people chasin em down the beach for ages. nice bridles to tangle too.
get either an inflatible or an arc, and u will be trouble free.

Hi Byron,

Totally have to disagree with "CAUTION's" advice.

I land my foil by myself all the time and its actually easier than an inflatable. The only kite I have ever used is a foil and currently have a 7m Maniac. The reason I went with the foil was because it was quicker to set up and launch by myself and also easier to land and packup. Water relaunching is also alot easier and quicker, if the leading edge is face down all you need do is let the bar go, the kite will relaunch backwards, rotate in the air and land on the water again leading edge facing upwards.

I would recommend a 7m Maniac over a 5m as you will have a wider window of wind conditions to use the 7m over the 5m. With my 7m I am able to fly from about 10kts to 25kts.

If you have any other Q's let me know.

sargio when you say it is easier to land a foil and quicker to set up and luanch by yourself and the water reluanching is alot easier and quicker what are you comparing it to?? as you said yourself the foil is the only kite you have used give an inflatable a go you might be plesantly suprised
reluanching an inflatable is just another skill that any good kiter should know how to do from the first lesson and once you learn it only takes a matter of seconds to reluanch one anyway.

one thing that i have noticed watching people learn on foils and people learnig on inflatables wich there are plenty of both down at pelican point and i have spent many hours watching them cos its what i get paid to do is that the people learning on inflatables develop better kite flying skills alot sooner than the people on learning foils.
foils vs inflatables is something that we could go on for ages about but at the end of the day it comes down to different things for different people and if it gets you on the water safely and you are having fun then its all good

but sargio you realy should try an inflatable like i said you could be plesantly supprised you too byron

Byron I too learnt with Ian Young and was advised by him to buy a flysurfer warior 9.3. Before I did I spoke to every salesman at every shop trying to gauge different peoples advice. I found a lot of the shops were at that time bias towards inflatables, but be careful Ian is the importer for the maniacs so it is in his best interest for you to buy a maniac. After flying a few freinds inflatables and a flysurfer i went with the flysurfer because of the safety value of ditching the bar if I got into trouble and launching quickly. After a few seasons I will try inflatables again. Too many people close their minds to something different thats why we get people bagging inflatables and people bagging foils.
TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
Buy what you feel confident in. Take a lesson with a school that teaches on inflatables. $80 bucks is small change compared to buying the wrong kite for you.

I am a beginner and have an old wipika 6.5m kite (don’t actually know the model), I was out on Sunday evening but I think it was a bit under powered in 15kts of wind,
what would you recommend I buy for 15kts and lower winds,
Also my wipika is currently set up on 2 lines, is it possible to convert them to 4 lines, and can you get a conversion kit or something for the bar to accommodate the 2nd harness loop.
Thanks for any help available

nailer, all u do is take the bridle off and roll up the tips.
then u need to buy 2 more lines equal length to the other 2 u have (either see kite dr or hold the lines in wembley) and then u need to either get a cleat for ur bar to put the chicken string thru, or have a fixed 4-line with a depower strap. u can get all the gear from either of these guys, or other shops will prob help.
just remember it will cost for others to do it for u, but make sure u understand how it all works if u r gonna tackle it urself.

for under 15 knots it depends on experience and how much grunt u want, and also the board u r gonna use.
if u aint experienced dont buy a big kite as u r asking for trouble!
i use my 11.5 caution in ultra lite winds, i just use a 6'6 directional and fixed 4-line.
others use 14's, some go up to 16's or 20's, but they arent as easy to use as ur little wippi 6.5m.....
hope this helps.
go talk to the shops, most of em know their products.

I am ALWAYS up front with my students about importing FlySurfers and tell them that I am biased ... but as a result of years of experience on almost every type of kite on the market.

I have been teaching longer than anyone else in Australia and taught for years with Wipika LEI. I completely disagree with Damo about the speed of learning flying skills - Damo often teaches with a 2-line LEI to start with and that's fine and sure they will pick up the basics more quickly than going straight to a 4-line kite (of any type) but most people buy a 4-line kite and it only takes about an extra 30 mins max to learn on a 4 line to start with.

I switched to teaching with FlySurfer foils because they are much easier for people to learn 4-line concepts, are safer and are significantly easier to relaunch in even the most demanding conditions. Unlike some others in the sport, I became the importer because nobody else was and I loved the kites - not finding an opportunity and trying to flog the product off.

If you ask my students I always encourage them to try before they buy and make their own decision. But I also tell them to look at the total picture incl: setting up, actually use the safety systems and then relaunch off the water, wind range, repairs and maintenance, life of kite, etc.

I love foils but am the first to admit that most people opt to buy LEI - but then again I am into wave riding and like my own directional boards too I really believe the current popularity of LEI has nothing to do with performance, safety or any logical reasons but is more a result of peer group pressure, marketing and bull**** spread about foils like has appeared on this thread about dropping a kite by yourself, water relaunching, etc.

Cheers,
Ian Young

Here here Ian when I researched my kite after lessons with you I beleive you told me to try Lei's then make my decision. You were always upfront with me and was the only person I spoke to that said to shop around and try other styles of kites. Everyone else purely pushed LEI's. Same argument as Aussie cars vs imported cars most people buy the inferior product because thats what Dad drives or the freinds drive. Don't be sheep buy what suits you not everybody else.

I recommend that you drop into Windsurfing Perth in Myaree. see their web page at
www.windsurfingperth.com.au
They have one of the best stocked shops in Perth
The prices of kites have dropped a lot year, which is really helping the sport a lot.
Plus they give free lessens.

Damo, sounds like you and Ian Young should put your harnesses on and have a kite fight on the water at Peli point.
Like in a Hong Kong action movie, 20m above the water in Slooooow motion. I can see it now, Ian's kite board with its sword like fins, slashing at you lines, and Damo's kite loop, unhooked, head butts...
Blood and heaps of gutz on the beach like KILL BILL.

Love it, I tell the boyz and by the beers... and film it

I started on warrior 9.3 before i met ian young and thought it was good but lost it on windy day! Tried LEI and are good to fly and prob easier to jump early but went back to Flysurfers after three months as overall easier to use especially if sailing on your own ( or so I reckon. I would buy a warrior over maniac any day. If you are 80 kg or over a 9.3 might be best or 7 if you are lighter or using mainly directional board

G'day Byron,if you're not too confused.I've got a 5M maniac and 9.3M warrior 4 sale.$500 for the maniac(1 small professional repair),$1000 for the warrior.I weigh in at a massive 72kg & can fly the warrior from 12kts-23kts,great kite especially for beginners-intermeditate or pro if you're Ian.The maniac also goes great in 20kts+.I learnt on both & never had to chase anything down the beach.Give me a call if you want to know anything more or if you just want to have a fly to see if they really are the kite for you.my contacts;0417925904 or 94473116.cheers

Greets,
Fingers...Is the Maniac 5 still available?
If so, I hope we might be able to work out a sale...
If the distance is a issue, I am willing to negotiate
the fees....and, am in no hurry...
I've been looking for a 5~7m FS kite for a few weeks now
to add to my quiver of Warrior9.5 and Mastair 12.
Hope you're able to assist.

Much good winds to all.
K.
