I am having extreme difficulty when landing my kite, to the point where I can't go kiting without a mate. Please anyone who knows how to land a kite safely (and without ruining the kite)post some tips to help me out.

Use a safety leash?? and engage it???

sometimes i can unhook, depower the kite with the depower strap before hand , and lightly crash the kite on the beach at the edge of the window with enough speed to force it to touch the whole leading edge on the beach, at the same time, run towards the kite, and grab the nearest front line only and pull around 3 metres of it towards you , this will turn your now upside down kit fully into wint, and hopefully stop it slideing or flipping, I'd only recommend this to experienced users, and i certainly wouldn't do it if overpowered.or any ppl downwind. But seriously I've used my safety to land plenty of times by myself, it does not damage the kite weather you engage from overhead, or near the ground

Thanks for your tips dachopper, I'll have to give the safety leash method a go. I just thought there might have been a particular method for landing.

The method I use, but once again only in lighter winds is to fly it down the side of the window that is opposite to that your safety is attached to (ie; if safety goes to right side of kite you go down left side of window)

Unhook when kite is about 9 metres off ground

Dive kite at ground (really dive it! )

let go of bar as soon as it's diving

run to kite holding one line

This doesn't work all the time! sometimes the kite will roll to the bottom of the window on the safety so it is important that you have lots of room downwind. I would say that I have a 90% success rate though.

If it's overpowered conditions and I'm first in or on my own I just let it go in the water and walk in the last bit

5th line.

5 mins extra to set up each time.

Can self launch exactly like a 4 line.

Or launch with a buddy as usual.

Flys the same.

But landing on your own is no drama.

Pull the QR.

The kite turns upside down and flutters to the ground with no force.

The trick is to get your balls in the right place.

Stopper balls that is.

from kite forum -

Quote:
people being scared to realise there kites to the leash before the **** hits the fan. I have a couple of mates who never pull their QR they'd rather just get dragged down the beach and wait for someone to grab them or their kite.

this is the famous nail on the head!

and this thinking and behavior will and does kill people.
The most of us are not ready to pull their QR, or are not trained to do it in a bad situation.
"my kite will get wet - I don't want to swim back - my lines get tangled - etc" famous thoughts before some people die or injure themselves.

This has to stop! We need to actively be ready anytime to pull the QR. Otherwise the best QR won't help us.
If you have a new bar or system, train several times and do it several times to activate your QR. This way you will know that your QR works and you will train where the QR is. This way you will also see, if it works or not.
When I go to Brazil next week, I will also train it during kiteloops, this way I can see if it opens in excelleration and show myself, that it works and I'm ready to pull anytime.

We have to train this, as we had to use the break withing parts of a second to stop the car.

Found a detailed drawing on kiteforum but cant find it again. I'll start a new thread - I know Pete from Addiction kiteboards has all the info. I'm sure a post will get us a drawing to follow.

I used to self land my kites at the edge of the window by letting the bar go but found they always kartwheel downwind from you tangling your lines in the process. I kite Scarbs 95% of the time and whenever I need to selfland now, I position myself next to a bin or sometimes next to the poles in the sand used for beach volleyball, make sure no one is downwind of you, hold the kite staight above you at 12 oclock and disengage, the kite flaps out of the sky gently and downwind already without kartwheeling. Then I just undo my safety line and attach it to the bin or around the pole so I can go to grab my kite and turn it over. Too easy, no mess, no tangles.
Thats my two bobs worth(also would not recommend grabbing any of your lines whilst self landing at the edge of the window unless you think one of your fingers is too long and want to do something about it!!!)

I just let the bar go and drop the kite in the water, letting the safety leash do the work. Then just retrieve as normal.

I did try landing it a few times on the beach but have had limited success. There were a couple of spots where the wind wouldn't blow very strong so I landed it there.

Stopped doing that now as it was just too risky and the margin for error wasn't worth it.

I usually pick something with a wind shadow behind it at the side of the window (usually a clump of bushes) then drop the kite (Leading Edge first) behind them. You still want space down wind if it goes pear shaped but if you've picked the target well the kite will be harmless once it drops below the height of this object. To be doublely sure always have your QR at hand.

copied from a previous thread about 10 months ago. see article at the following link http://www.ikiteboarding.com/article_detail.aspx?id=87

i use this technique and have had it work absolutely perfectly many times. just wish I could get it right every time. in strong winds (>20knts) best to get a helping hand or dump the kite in the water...
