Does this mean that if I buy a "golf bag" for my gear that it won't attract excess baggage fees when travelling overseas. I saw it on the net and it looks very tidy.
I've got relatives in the airline industry and its seems that airlines around the world will ONLY consider golf bags and ski's/snowboards as sporting equipment. Anything else (i.e. surfboards, kite equipment etc) doesnt count and will inccur excess baggage fees, also each airline has different restrictions to how much you can carry and/or the dimension of the sports equipment (call the ailine your flying with before heading off). I've been told that its been like that for over 10 years now.
Also using regular golf bags may not even make the cut as some airlines require you to put your golf bag in a travel case (similar to the NSI deceiver golf bag) for insurance purposes.
It still doesnt make sense to me but I bet its probably cause the ailines wants to take care of thier better off travellers who fly first class for golfing/skiing holiday, which if you ask me is absolute bull$h!t.
The thing now is how long can we pull this off before the ailines smarten up.
Hey guys here's what i got for the airlines for domestic:
Virgin Blue- the way to go IMO Consider sporting bags as 5kgs. I.e if you have 20kgs of baggage allowance and say you are carrying a kiteboard in a bag, thats considered as 5kgs regardless of the weight. You'll have 15kgs left.
I used this to my advantage and flew with 3 bags: 1 x Surfboard bag with a 6'0 surfboard and a kiteboard (weighed about 20kgs including the dirty clothes I threw in.
1X kiteboard bag with 2 kites (weighed 10kgs) and
1X luggage bag with 10kgs
Thats a total of 40kgs!!! and the 2 "sport bags" went in without even being weighed!! Kick ass!!
Quantas Quantas allows surfboards and etc but you have to call them prior to your flight and arrange for it. Just call 131313 and give em your flight details.
They will not charge extra so long the total weight of the bag does not exceed 32kgs
and the total luggage should not exceed 32kgs if i'm not mistaken.
