I'm leaving tonight for 5 days at Fraser. Has anyone kited there before and can you recommend any reasonable spots? The wind looks like it will be shifting all week.
My mate would like to have a go too if there's anywhere safe enough for a first timer.
Cheers

Fraser has many open beaches on the east coast that are kiteable just like any other beach on the sunshine coast. My only problem with Fraser and the North Shore for beginners is that there are a lot of vehicles on the beach which is not good for flying a kite on the beach or at waters edge. I saw a guy on the beach up at Waddy point but the wind direction / angle of the beach up there is not good. My suggestion would be the east coast section but only for experienced kiters and have someone on the beach looking out for you all the time. Don't go too far out the back - I've seen some big fish up there with pointy teeth.

Most of the lakes on Fraser are surrounded by 50m high sand dunes...

The wind will be up and down like a whore's knickers...

The lakes are not kiteable at all. Your best bet will be a downwinder on the east coast - just get someone to follow you with a 4wd and make sure you set up at low tide with lots of beach so that you are nowhere near passing vehicles.

There have been a lot of queries about Fraser Island here before, try a search.

I also let the grammar gnome loose on your post, he added some capitals and fixed some spelling ;-).

a downwinder sounds awesome. hopefully there won't be many cars, we'll be there mid week so the weekend warriors won't be out.
can't wait

I was there in July. I drove most of the east coast of the island and visited all of the large lakes. I've been kiting for more than 8 years and I didn't see a single place that I'd consider kiting there. It's notoriously one of the sharkiest places on earth and if you get in trouble you're on your own. Not worth it.

All the lakes are surrounded by tall trees and the wind won't get in adequately to be of any quality.

Don't listen to all these people talking about sharks. Your more likely to get hit by a bus. I was up there a couple of weeks ago kiting the channel from rainbow beach to Fraser. Went back and forth a few times. Had quite a good session and the only woldlife i saw was a couple of rays and a few turtles. Although they do say you don't see the shark that gets you. The key is not to spend to much time body draging for your board. I say get out there and enjoy. I guarantee there wont be a crowd. You may even have the whole of Frazer Island to yourself.

As an ex pro fisherman for 6 years up and down the east coast from cape york to mooloolaba the biggest tigers and bronzies I've seen have been outside fraser island and out the front of rainbow/double island point. Heaps of the buggers!

But I've kited there - I just don't go in the between inskip/fraser, or out too far in deep blue water.

Cheers

I haven't been there since i started kiting but remember lake makenzie (a big one) having major wind swell, reckon it would have been kitable for sure. (was so long ago though, but deffinately worth a check unless someone else knows better)

Oh hang on just found this image.. Which seems to support Clintos.. I remember white caps though...

I was there about 4 weeks ago. It was about 20knots on the beach but breezy at lake Mackenzie but no white caps. Also very on and off.

just got back, thanks for the input the wind never came in except for at midnight on thursday. not much use. did a bit of swimming and boarding with no shark sightings but the currents there are huge.
hopefully next time the conditions will be better.
cheers
