A friend of mine is taking up a job in Malaysia and is just getting into kiting. I can't remember where he is going but there is apparently plenty of people kiting there. Does anyone have the low down on where is good, what kites people use, when is it windy and any other kite related info. Thanks!

I lived in Malaysia for 2 years a couple of years ago.

I never saw anyone kiting but it was early days for the sport.

Around Kuala Lumpur/Klang there is hardly ever any consistent wind - great for wakeboarding but I dare say not kitesurfing. The coastline is pretty much mangrove mud flats anyway.

Up north on the west coast you do get 10-12 knot NWerlies at times, so kiting from the islands of Lankgawai and Penang may be a possibility on a big kite. The water's usually pretty murky though, and I'd watch the currents...

The northern half of the east coast is probably the best bet - during the snorkelling/diving off season they get a bit of wind - my guess from memory is that feb-march might be the go?? - but worth double checking that...

Handy tip #1 for Malaysia - if/when pulled over by the cops for speeding, offer to pay the fine "on the spot" - RM50 (about AU$20)should do it every time...

Drop a note to Jason Chang in Singapore on:

Nice guy who will be sure to help out. "Jasons Bay" on the SE of mainland Malaysia quite close to Singapore is one good spot apparently.

all the best

Hey Internerd I'm currently on hols in Malaysia and have scoped the place out. The only real place to kick it off over here is Balok - Terengganu. Theres handful of kiters over there. Its about an hour north of club med which is on the east coast of west malaysia (bout four hours drive from KL)

Another decent place to do it is Johor Baru which is on the border of Malaysia and singapore. Still scoping the place out, if i find anything else I'll give drop you a line.

Cheers
