I realise the kite shops need to make a living, but where else can you get cheap 2-way, 1.4L pumps in Perth? I found this post from a while back:

daggy (21/03/2004)
dude, Brand new pump , identical to the KOOKABURRA pumps for sale at WA SALVAGE - $17.00

But only WA SALVAGE? Up to date costs? Any with gauges? Anywhere else? (Bunnings, Dep't stores?)

(And, out of curiosity, on average what do pumps from kite makers sell for? I have seen costs of up to 400%, compared to noname brands at hardware shops).

adamaki,
we sell normal 12000cc double action hand pumps for $28. Aluminium shafted pumps we get from Airush International go for $75; that might explain the 400% bit if you didn't realise they were reinforced. Camping stores also sell pumps but I haven't looked at their pricing. As far as I know only Slingshot make a pump with a gauge.

OT, but just out of interest ('cos I'm bored), has anyone ever tried blowing up a kite with lungpower alone?

apparently Fadi Issa pumps his kites via the mouth (I read this in an interview) I guess you would feel pretty crap after though?

The main design fault with the conventional kite pump is the T-bar handle grip. When you load-up one side of the T-bar too much when pumping, the handle will snap. The handle grip needs to be a D shaped one which you can fully grip and therefore spread the load when pushing or pulling the shaft. I've modified my pump by cable-tying a metal 'D' handle to the top of the T-bar. Problem solved.

i've bought a camping pump once and it melted in the back of my car before i got to use it! argh

be careful you don't buy one too cheap. Some have two tubes running inside them, and twisting the handle breaks them. The pumps that come with your kite are much better quality.

RRD make a metal shaft, gauge pump in large and xtra large, but shipping them into aus means they will cost heaps (not heavy, just big!). Still, what's a kite shop without pumps? so we'll be trying to get some in soon. Hopefully less then $75 but who knows.
