Has anybody spend time on Fraser Island late March / early April and can you recommend spots etc.

I am looking for holiday ideas over the Easter period and the clear warm waters sure look appealing.

Does anybody else start planning thee next holiday the first day back from the previous one….ohh to be filthy rich…

Yeah I thought the waters looked appealing to so I put on my mask and speargun and swam out through the waves looking for fish..- that was until the fishermen on the point started yelling and waving to me. I turned around and went ashore to be told of several Sharks only a couple of hundred metres away which were feasting on the fish they were catching (and probably other stupid southerners). You could look down on the point above the fishermen and see them cruising along the water near their lines- What can I say except I'm older now and less stupid. Fraser is great though, very diverse. Accomodation I couldnt reccomend as I camped (plenty of sites just need to get a permit)
Wasn't kiting back then so I dont know what the low down is, just practise your jumps for the crocs and sharks!

There is no better place to go for 4wdriving, camping and fishing but when i was there 9 years ago i was told by locals never go in the water for any reason. Apparently they are shark invested.
The mainland even though close is cool, Rainbow beach nice and windy in summer and you can drive youre 4wd on the beach all the way to noosa.

theres some popular kite beaches at hervey bay, and also (i think) at inskip point.

check www.kitebeaches.com for 'Urangan Pier' and 'The Dome'. once you're there the local kiters might be able to give you more info on fraser itself...

Thanks for all your advice. I wonder how sharky the waters are? I guess it is a risk but i have always considered the likely hood of a shark attack minimal. Is Fraser particularly bad????

I liked the idea of Frazer as I figured being an small island i should be able to find a spot regardless of the wind direction.

The shark stories are pretty true. I spent 3 weeks there doing some research on the beach and I never saw anyone swim on the ocean side, and heard lots of stories about Noah's around the island. The water is particularly fertile there, it's also good for dugongs, whales, etc. But you're more likely to get killed flying over east than you are getting eaten....

I went to Fraser a couple of years ago. I went up in the small plane and flew over the island and I can tell you I saw several sharks and they were not that far off shore!

I think I might have to go back to the drawing board and find another destination. Shame as it looked a great spot but no point wasting a few weeks holiday if I cant get in the water.

You could try Morton island, just spent a week there and kitted every day. The best part is being an island you can kite any wind direction. The waters are pristinly clean as are the beaches. As for sharks well if I was worred about, that I would never go kitting or surfing. If you go you should go camping as the Resort is a major hole. If you need more info on boat, rangers, telephone numbers maps etc let me know.

Fraser has awesome beach breaks and a few nice little point breaks on the north east side of the island...

Definately keep an eye out for sharkies but if you don't see any keep an eye out for manta rays!! One almost got me, off Champagne Pools... After our surf a bus load of swedish tourists ventured into the water...

Moral of the story - entice the tourists to come and watch you kite, from the water.

Moreton easily has as many sharks as Fraser. Just go to Fraser or Hervey Bay.
Don't wear polarised glasses, what you can't see won't worry you.

Seabreeze ate my long post, dammit. Short version:
Hundreds of people swimming in the sea everyday over xmas, I camped at cooloola for 5 days. No sharks around. Spearfishing is a different matter, it's asking for trouble.

The kiting was great, being able to drive on the beach makes for great downwinders. Water is warm and clear. Just watch for f@ckwits in 4wds doing 100+ along the waterline, they're far more dangerous than the sharks!
