Hi,
I read a thread outlining the leighton no fly zone recently but can't find it now.
I was wondering how Leighton stacks up for a 1st seasoner such as moi?
I took a look at it last night and felt that, especially towards the club end (out of bounds?) there is enough space as long as I am sensible and cautious on launch and land (have read heaps on this here lately and putting tips into practise).
I live close to brighton but know that it isn't user friendly so have been trekking to mullaloo so far this season, but would prefer leighton if poss?
Also I know the ever helpful Ian Young mentioned that WAKSA was working on a map or similar for safe areas in Perth - any ideas?
Cheers all and thanks for any advice

Hey getfunky,
If your looking for somewhere to learn to kite I`d have to think any beach where there`s lots of people is not a good idea. But if you are not a danger to others then Leighton is mint . As far as I understand the only place you can kite ( or do any other board sport after october) at Leighton is at the two carparks south of the overpass end . Maybe at the dog beach but that gets crowded with two and four legged species and fecies . I`ve consistantly been going to Leighton for years now because it`s close to me and has a big wide beach .
The one major problem your going to face there is the windsurfers .
According to some of them they bought the beach and closed it for private use only . I had to confont two windsurfers in the carpark a few nights ago after getting abuse and the usual head on ,just missed you thing while on the water . Also watch out for a pole boarder named Angel . I`ve seen him run down unsuspecting kiters from upwind assults and throw peoples boards down the beach .
So anyway mr getfunky come on down bring your friends , it`s really a nice place to kite !

Hey thanks for the reply digital.
Did you mean it is ok to kite anywhere south of the footbridge and north of the surf club?
I have now had about 5 hours of lessons and 7 or so days out on my own, so i think I am reasonably safe and definately careful. I checked Leighton out in the arvo a couple of days ago and there wasn't a hell of a lot of sluggo and bikini punters about which was encouraging. I did notice 3 newbies walking shamefully (geez i can't wait to get upwind - am almost there), so thought it probably looked ok. I like the way the beach wraps around too for wind direction options.
Oh thanks too for the windsurfer tip offs as well. Sounds like a couple of free lobotomies were given away with a sail or two! I guess they realise how weak jibing looks after all...
Cheers,

Most windsurfers are pretty cool about kites and deserve respect for generally trying to keep a safe distance and it is just a couple who have the problem. Angel might sail like a learner but he has actually being windsurfing for decades. The impression he gives people on the water, is that he is an extremely angry dangerous and unstable individual. The fact that this is sport and meant to be fun is something he obviously forgot a very long time ago. In his state of delusion he apparently believes that he bought the real estate in front of any beach he sails along time ago and he doesn't like to share. His attitude is one he shares with large number of prison inmates, unfortunately he is out their amongst us generally pretty mellow kiters and windsurfer. He deserves a wide berth. He has assaulted several kiters that I know of, myself included. Windsurfers who he thinks have got in his way are not immune either, and if you have any complaints about him involving physical assault, best to add it to the Cottesloe Police file. Dont feel bad about it, We are all big boys now and its along time since the schoolyard. It is very hard to go windsurfing from prison, but civil societies is forced to lock certain individuals to protect the rights of the majority..

wow sounds like a he belongs with the fruit in a chocolate bar! Ta I'll do my best to avoid this nutter.
Any clues on the excluded zones at Leighton though? Is anywhere south of the overpass ok? Even in front of the club and south of there? Obviously keeping an eye out for fruit n' nut bars...
Cheers all,

hey getfunky ,
If your reasonable then get on down there ! The area in which I`m talking about is the small section at the overpass which runs south for about 200m (??) . Next time your at Leighton take the time and go into each carpark and at each beach entry there are sign postings which indicate what`s permissable . The only place as far as I understand where anyone can have year round use of the beach such as kiting, windsurfing, surfing is at the overpass section . At the club house end you can during the winter months but is banned from the end of October and through the summer months .
niall barrett`s comments cut to the core so take it in .

best section for kiting is from about 250-300m south of the overpass up to the overpass itself. north of there is where most windsurfers go and is the start of the dog beach.
definately no go anywhere near the club house between 1 oct and 31 march.

Cheers guys. I had to ask as i saw a bloke kiting in front of the club a couple of days ago and thought it a little too good to be true.
Still on windy days when the crowd thins out the rest looks a go-er.
Hope to see you and not Angel out there.

Can someone post the full name of this "Angel" character. If you have a confrontation with this guy file a report with the police. After a few reports have been filed they start to take notice and will charge the guy.
