I'm with HBF, but I checked their website today, and it specificaly excludes claims arising from (8) engaging in (c) Water activities involving an aerial device.

http://www.hbf.com.au/Glossary/General%20Insurance/Special_Conditions.html

I'm a paid up member of WAKSA, so I have the public liability insurance but I also want to know that I'll be looked after properly in the (hopefully unlikely) event I end up in a tree or on the road.

give up work... get a health-care card and let the dole pay for your next kite... it has a free health plan

but, seriously, I doubt any insurer, other than Loyd's (and they aren't what they used to be), would go near any of us with an underwriters pole...

you'll probably do more harm to yourself trying to get a clear answer from any of the ins' co's...

as long as there is not a police report issued, that the co's investigators might get there hands on, you and ALL your MATES were just walking along the beach when all of a sudden... WHAM!!! Who would have reckoned that could have happened!? Tale whacked by a breaching Orca!

well... you and ALL your MATES probably have more sedate and believable imaginations than I do... so, look out for each other... if you get my drift

2. Engaging in:
a. Mountaineering or rock climbing.
b. Hang gliding or tow gliding.
c. Water activities involving an aerial device.
d. Hunting.
e. Racing other than foot racing.
f. Motor cycling (unless You hold a current Australian motor cycle license).
g. Underwater activities involving the use of an artificial breathing apparatus (unless You hold an open water diving license recognised in Australia or are diving with a qualified instructor).
h. Professional or organised sport of any kind.

Mate, why bother with insurance

h. preety much includes anything. An 'organised sport' so like a casual backyard cricket game is 'organised' to some degree !!!

What a joke.

I think ill have to remember all this and if EVER get hurt - cant remember what happened, just woke up and i was like this ??

I just called my health insurance mob (Medibank Private) . They told me they do not have exclusions for injuries caused by things like kite surfing! I would suggest anyone considering them to check it out for your self just in case I have got this wrong.

Just joined Medibank Private and second that kite surfing injuries are not excluded on their policy. When I explained why I was joining the woman said "well, our ambulance cover includes air, land and sea". Also although most items (dental/optical etc) have a 2 month waiting period after joining before you can claim benefits, the accident cover starts immediately - but the ambo cover has the 2 month wait so don't have a BAD accident untill after 2 months (or maybe not at all).

Hi all,

If you are an IKO instructor, check out the insurance offered by the IKO, they offer kitesurfing specific health cover as well as public liability for your teaching and also accident cover internationally. This insurance for health/public liability is unlimited expenses in most cases for overseas injury etc, but is only available to IKO instructors who have access to the "pro login" area.

Just another reason to become an IKO instructor!

Hi guys, as an ambo I would recommend everyone has ambulance cover-one emergency call will cost you about $500 in WA, more in other states.
The best deal is Medibank Private -about $30/year.

I do not know about insurance for kite surfing but as far as private cover goes read on.....

With out my private cover i would not have been able to be at the alamanda private hospital let alone be treated by one of the best spine men on the planet and incidently the only dude in QLD and one of two on the east of australia that can perform the disk replacement i recieved. What did it mean to me, i will be able to kite and surf again otherwise it was game over for me. (fusion city)

Even with full cover the gap payment was $4000.
Get your private cover and have your credit card in good enough shape to get a emergency up grade if needed. If you think you can get this type life style saving surgery in the public system your very mistaken. In fact i will help you pick out a good gardening fork cause thats all you will be able to do, or perhaps play a groovy game of bowls. If you do a disk this is the only surgery that will keep you in the water and going hard. How many people do a disk ask around- see for yourself

If you need micro surgery on say ligament it must be done within 36 hours (i think). Any longer and you will loose performance. You wanna go onto a waiting list for a micro surgon- good luck!! Thats a lot of stress to save 20 bucks a week!!

Also Surgons are like kiters some good ones some not so good. You want a good one you gotta pay.

But hay i paid this private **** for 10 years untill i really needed it. Was it worth it -you bet!!

Do not bury your head in the sand on this one, ask around, make up your own mind- i am just telling it from own experiences good luck!!

Are other kiters included as the "public" in Waksas public liablity insurance policy? So if I'm kiting and another kiter takes me out and is at fault and has waksa membership will his public liability cover my medical epxenses?

See comments below from Brother-in-law who is an insurance broker, he makes some references to my own cover (house etc) but I've left that in for completeness:

"well interesting reading good to see the insurance industry has improved it's image!"

On the insurance needs, it's not a question of Public liability so much, changes to legislation here around two years ago have thankfully made it more difficult to sue for injuries sustained in an activity where there is an assumption of risk, like kite surfing, bike riding and so on. Your personal injury exposure is your own and I concur with the reco to have private health and income protection cover, we can assist with Income protection if interested.

The Public Liability exclusions quoted by one of the subscribers was quoting from a Business Policy by the way it read.

You are referring to Personal Liability exposure. Your insurance policy has $20m cover and does not exclude surf boards, skis, sailboards, canoes, etc etc. Home Contents Insurance comes with personal liability cover Australia Wide. The Allianz Gold policy is the most suitable for the general public needs and is an exclusive cover distributed through our dealer group only www.ibna.com.au .

Your policy wording for Personal Liability 6) confirms your Kite would be included.

Sounds like a bit of a mindfield but whilst the healthcare issue seems heavily dependant on the provider it still worth checking with your insurance provider on the specifics of your liability cover..

Hi Guys

Just wanted to clarify that HBF health insurance does cover any injuries resulting from sports, including kite surfing. Sorry the exclusions your talking about apply to travel insurance only.

If you are at all worried why not call HBF on 133 423.

rod, i believe the waksa/aksa policy includes a clause such that another member can't make a claim against another member.

afaik its not really for this sort of thing, its indemnity cover against you injuring bystanders
