The 2009 / 2010 Slalom + Marathon Race Series is not far away.
Watch this forum thread for further information regarding each event. Most races have been scheduled for Sundays, and if those days scheduled do not have sufficient wind forecast, then the event will be moved on to the next windy Sunday.
The Series will consist of Slalom + Marathon racing predominantly at the Murray Mouth, but will consider other locations depending on the forecast conditions.
The final race day in February will be a marathon race / social run along the entire length of the Adelaide metropolitan coast line from Seacliff to Semaphore.
Entrants must be current members of Windsurfing SA or interstate equivalents if you are travelling from interstate to compete. Refer the Windsurfing SA website for membership details and procedures <http://www.windsurfing.org/sa.htm>.
The emphasis for this race series is on FUN. First time racers are very welcome and encouraged.

It's great to see a Slalom-Marathon race series i know alot of work has gone into but it's made it hard for us guys not from Adelaide having to travel 500-600k round trip on a Sunday to compete.I guess it's designed to suit the local sailors which is fair enough hopefully i might be able to make it to one event. |

Can't wait!
Weekends off and both wave and flat water events coming up.
I like how these events are shaping up... a bit more fun than they used to be, even an average punter like me can get into it!
Hopefully it entices a lot of the other progressing/average people along.

The first round of this race series scheduled for this weekend will be postponed to the next windy Sunday.  Ideally we are after winds from SW to SE to hold the events at the Murray Mouth (where the boat is kept).
There will be no shortage of winds from this direction (seabreezes) in the coming weeks/months.

| There were 8-10 wave sailors at the comp on Sunday that are keen to enter - be interetsing to see how over rockered boards go in a slalom race - you speed guys will be able to cook the bbq while we are still going round the course! |

You guys with wave boards should be OK, particularly if you have a faster single fin board. If you can find an upright fin that will add a bit of speed. The great thing about slalom races is that there is usually someone in front who you can try and catch no matter where you are in the fleet. I reckon the important things are:
1. Don't fall off.
2. Sail powered up to keep on the plane and for speed out of gybes.
Get these right, and you could surprise yourself!

Round Two scheduled for this Sunday 11th October.
This round will also be postponed until we get a Sunday with a decent wind from the right direction. Don't worry everyone.......it will be worth it!!

No round two yet - still watching the weather conditions. This Sunday looks ok, but the boat is in for repairs (arrgh!!!....) and won't be available.
I'm sure that one weekend soon, it will all come together, and we'll get some great racing. |

Looking promising if we add a seabreeze on top of that prediction (not sure this site is that good a predicting local seabreezes?)
On the topic of getting equipment ready, it's really helpful in races if people have sail numbers organised. If your a member of Windsurfing SA, you already have an allocated national sail number.
I thought I'd share my "cheapskate" method for doing sail numbers. First, use your computer to print your numbers out on A4 sheets, one number per page as large as you can make it. Cut them out, and this is your template. Maybe stick them on thin cardboard for durability - you only need to make these templates once.
Go to your hardware store and get some adhesive vinyl (aka Contact) in black or whatever colour contrasts your sail. Don't scrimp and get cheaper Contact from a $2 store. Reverse the templates and trace the number outline on the back of the adhesive vinyl, then cut out the numbers.
Now, choose a part of your sail that does not have any seams in the way. A seam under the number is a weak spot that will allow water underneath. Clean the area of the sail with metho and a paper towel and allow to dry - a few minutes. Work the backing off one small corner of the number. Carefully stick the number to the sail by holding it in place and peeling off the backing from under the number, starting from the corner where the backing has already been peeled back. Keep the number flat, making sure it goes down with no wrinkles. What the heck, this bit is the same for all sail numbers anyway.
Now rub the number down with a semi-hard edge that won't damage the sail or number. I use the end of a plastic ruler. If you look underneath the number (on monofilm anyway) you can see where the adhesive has "taken" with rubbing. Especially make sure the edges are stuck down good. And there you have it. Try not to fold your sail near the numbers, but people don't fold their sails, do they?
I've done this for years, and I've found the numbers can stay on for years too. Much cheaper than professional numbers cut from sticky-back dacron.
Now, what are the chances of me turning up on Sunday without sail number?

Racing confirmed for this Sunday (15th November) at the Murray Mouth.
But, be warned! The forecast has changed, the heat is continuing and there is a light southerly change forecast for late in the day. The south coast (Murray Mouth included) has been getting a southerly most afternoons this week that has capped the temperature at around 25 degrees and blown at around 15-20 knots at the weather station (Refer http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS60801/IDS60801.94677.shtml). As I type this, the BOM site is actually showing SSW at 30knots!
Sunday could end up as light wind, big boards, big sails racing, or it may be little stronger to allow more sailors out on smaller gear. Some of us have the gear to race in this light wind (or attempt to), so we will schedule this race and see if we can get a result.
Please remember:
- 11am registration + briefing.
- Race day entry fee $10 (correct money please).
- All competitors must be current members of WSA.
- PFDs must be worn.
- Sail numbers must be displayed.
- Volunteers always appreciated.

Just tried Dr Duck's cheap-ass sail number technique, it worked a treat. Thought it was time to get organised for Sunday's Race. I'm going to try a 6.5m V8 on the 100L Flare, sounds like a racey combo doesn't it.
Any other wave guys coming down for a laugh, I need some compitition for last place..
