I'm a very experienced diver (4000+ dives for work) and on Mon when I was kiting 50 mtrs straight out from the pier I missed a big fin which took off like lightning when I got a couple of meters away. Now this wasn't a dolphin and I'm guessing a bully (as i have seen a few before) I'm taking a punt it was 2 mtrs or just over.

Has anyone heard of sharks at sandgate? I'm not exactly scared of them but I did have it in the back of my mind for the day..

With Cabbage Tree Creek at Shorncliffe and The Pine Rivers at Hasting Inlet (Brighton), Bramble Bay has always had penty of Noahs out there looking for food.

Back in the day when there was only a hand full of us kiting Brighton/Sandgate we would occassionally see small to large size Bull , Shovel Nose and the odd decent size Tiger shark when riding, at the time we were more worried about the thousands of Stingrays that call Brighton/Sandgate home , the beach at low tide had more craters than the moon

It could always be worse, we could have the Blue Blubber jelly fish swarms that fill the bay they seem to be missing in action this year

Yeap we get sharks sighting reports all the time when I was patrolling the Redcliffe area. Most are from trawlers who are returning with a full catch load behind their boats. Sharks are everywhere, but shark attacks are very very very rare especially in Brisbane. My advice -

1/. Do not kite at sunrise/sunset - that's sharks meals time
2/. Do not kite near canals/river mouths - that's where they come in and out!

No prize for guessing where this is....

Its the ocean... sharks live there... no suprise right? no point worrying abut it though, you are more likely to be taken out by a bad driver on the way to the beach than by seafood at the beach its-self!
