Saw this pic in the other thread. What are peoples thoughts and experiences with double ended stand up paddles (long kayak paddles).

Cool old pic too.

Probably better for flat water.... (???)

Also, legalities of racing with a double ender?
Or are they effectively slower than a 'normal' paddle?

Maybe it's a good match up for the "standamaran" / Stand Up Catamaran !

Race Hawaii has unleashed initial previews of the forthcoming Race Hawaii Power Glider. Paddle makers are scratching their heads in awe over the high-tech patent-pending Star Grip that looks like it came straight from an episode of Star Wars.

I ran into Race Hawaii founder Scott Bucknell in a surf lineup on Oahu's North Shore and demoed a prototype. It was a small day, and I saw Scott paddling out with the most unusual piece of equipment I'd ever seen on the water. More curious than skeptical, I was excited when Scott handed me the paddle and I was off. To my surprise, the paddle felt very natural and the workout was intense. From my experience with the Power Glider, a focused 20 minute paddle out using the Power Glider feels as if it compresses about an hour's workout into that short amount of time.

Now, the next question is, what's going to happen when the Power Glider enters competitive racing?

For a limited time, Race Hawaii is giving a sneak peek the patent-pending Star Grip Power Glider. Get your pre-release peek at www.racehawaiistandup.com/powerglider.

I tried the grip you would require with a double ended paddle (tried it on a single ended paddle), and you just don't get the power. Simple as that. I think the lost power is quite a bit greater than the time saved swapping sides.

Did you notice that the paddle is tied to the board?

HeySimondo
Given the importance you place on knowing the names of people in surf history can you name the guy with double ended paddle?

I used to own one of these about 20 years ago, in Durban. They used to call them "Crocker Skis" but they may have had a different name here in Oz.

They were actually a lot of fun and I had a friend who used to absolutely rip on them. The rope tied to the front of the board actually enables you to do some big moves, especially re-entries. You can even catch a wave paddling out by using the rope to hook the board around while bashing the lip.

I reckon that with the advances in SUP shapes you might see some of these coming back. Don't knock them unless you've tried them.

We had one of these when I was a kid in Perth. My old man was a clubbie and they were used a lot. You used to lean against the rope when you were on a wave.
