Just wondering if there will ever be a Stand up paddle board racing designated to flat water, rivers, creeks, Hize dams, etc.
I love paddling, love stand up, and love competion and could paddle all day on flat water. But all the SUP races seem too be held out in the ocean, or have an ocean finish, and i have little too no knowledge on currents, waves, breaks, sets, etc etc.
I am trying too learn, i contacted a couple of SUP schools regarding one on one lessons out in the ocean, to be told a) by the first one that he dosnt really do that (even though his website said he did?), and if he did it would be really expensive and not worth my while (hmm ok, wish i could run my business like that) b) told their was no surf, and will get back too you when the conditions are better. (never actually got back too me) All i really want too do is learn how too get in and out through the break saftely, and some paddling technique/foot placement on waves and swell etc, so my ass dosnt end up in the water
Mike man has kindly offered to take me out, and teach me, which i am very grateful for, and look forward too him sharing his knowledge.
But will there ever be racing on flatwater?
Cheers

You guys just sold a few boards and paddles on eBay didn't you? Including a Naish 12 Glide?

The Melbourne Crew do quite a bit of racing on Port Philip Bay, which is a cross between Ocean and Flat Water... no real waves to speak of usually... but there are downwind wave options some days. Not much help for you if you are on the Gold Coast.

Best advice is get out there with Mikeman for a few paddles.

Yes there will be for sure it all just takes time.

As for teaching in the waves we don't do it as part of out lessons but what we do do is give away free tips and help anyone for free when we go for a surf. Not lately though as with me out ang has had to look after me which has stopped her going surfing but that will change from next week. I do have someone who will teach you everything you would want to know if you like just PM me and i'll send you his number he is Trevor Hendy and will teach Sup lessons in the surf one on one. Its up to you. What board are you using in the surf? Also there is the Friday wave training that we always do if the conditions are right and thats also free. So there are plently options out there.

Cheers Jacko

I think the malfunction paddle race in a couple of weeks will be on flatwater with a beach run to the finish line.
As for ocean paddling and getting through the surf, I found the best way to learn was to get out there and try it. Find an uncrowded spot on a small day to start with and just practice, practice, practice. You need to get used to how your board moves in the ocean swell/chop/currents that you dont get in the flatwater and the only way to get better at this is to spend time out there.

Yep sold my old 10 foot "no name" board with paddle, and sold my 12' Naish and Naish dove tail surf paddle to help pay for my new DC 12'6 which I LOVE, and which im sure ill love even more once we make friends in the ocean

Yep think i will stick with mikeman. And then practice/practice/practice. I have a dragon boat/outrigging background, and nil surfing experiance, but i will get there hell or high water Just reading forums on here about rules, and "in-experianced" surfers/suppers, getting in the way and being dangerous to others and themselves, and i dont want too be one of those people
Thanks Jacko, i think its AWSOME that you guys put your own personal time for your free fitness groups in the morning, which i have attended, but with a business and 2 small kiddies i cant always commit to early morning, and my training times vary from day to day.

I checked the Malfunction site this morning and saw the finish line is going to be at the front of Cudgen surf club, so im assumning it might start in the river, and come out through the mouth then upto the surfclub??

But its all good, ill get there in the end, my question was more into regards too the flat water racing... i just noticed in the states their seems too be a large flat water following, as well as surfing and i was having a conversation with one of the ladies before the 5k race yesterday in Noosa, she was a local, and was under the impression that the 5k race was going too be in the river system, like last years before they released the race course for this year.
Anywhoo, the babie is asleep, and nanna is here so im off for a paddle

Last year the paddle stayed in the creek with a beach run on the sand to the finish line at the surf club - i think it might be the same again.

Hey Sim,

I've been honing surf skills lately myself by getting into small waves in the local river mouth on incoming tides... Started by falling off my board far more times than successfully going over waves/whitewater. Pretty soon that ratio turned around and now can ride over small broken waves no probs

practice, practice and practice. Time on the water and a lesson or 3 will have you confident asap.

Lets go for a paddle sometime - I'm keen to do that 5km race..

cheers froggo..

the alley ck mouth with a onshore wind and the tide just staring to go out is a ideal place to practice- part wave, part runner. its not a fast moving as the ocean, but it's about the closest you will get. lots of people doing ins and out there- sups, kayaks,oc's and skis.we had just done a snapper to burleigh run the other week and we all felt like our skills had improved from practicing. so if the surf is a dud, that's what we do in the arvos

cheers

Hey Sim, you are off to a good start here by getting in touch with like minded people.

There are a lot of people who are also starting out so don't worry about where you are currently at. We try and help out as much as we can but there is no substitute for getting out there on the water yourself (whether it's in the heavy or easy waters).

The conditions are not suitable at the moment for the open ocean (in our waters) so it could be a little while before we get another opportunity to take you out there. In the meantime I would recommend that you try look for choppier waters where you can home your skills a little. Lacey made a good call about the Creek mouths, like Currumbin, but watch out for the outgoing tides as you could get into a little bit of strife.

Even though I do like deep ocean paddling I also like paddling on the dams and rivers. I go up to Hinze dam and places like that. It opens up a whole new dimension to what you can do on a SUP. Some of the river marathons (eg Hawkesbury, Murray) have had Standups having a crack. Why not!

In one of the standup mags there are heaps of people doing rapids, rivers and even glacial waters. It's all good.
