Hello there!
I’ve been looking for spots to go kite landboarding and I was told that Port Gawlver might be a good place. I hear that the SA land yachters go there so I thought I could ask you guys about the conditions there.
At what sort of tide height does it get useable? Having never shared the spots with land yachts before is there anything I should keep in mind like right of way rules and such? And are there things I should or shouldn’t do to keep the locals happy.

Cheers

Hi Johan, re Port Gawler conditions, you should speak with hills, our moderator and/or Gizmo our resident wizard.

Re your question without a question mark, the short answer is, be polite and respectful towards ALL other users of the beach, even if it is Grannie walking her overfed Labrador dog.

G'day Johan

I wouldn't bother going there on the weekends that ALYC meet as they cordon off most of the usable part of the flats with local council permission. Unfortuantely I don't know their sailing schedule, but I believe they'd be in winter break now.

The only other people you'll meet there are the motocyclists who use it illegally, its not the sort of beach you'll find any beach goers at (or grannies with overfed labradors. )

On a non ALYC weekend, you should get a large area all to your self or perhaps shared with a few blokarters. Definitely large enough to keep out each others way without any probs.

The southern end of the beach near the Gawler river might be suitable for your needs, this way it will also keep away from the ALYC races.
Most days at low tides would give a sailable areas, the warmer the weather the bigger the areas and keep an eye out for a "dodge tide" its where the tide is low for several days (only happens on a couple of spots in the world... and not that often http://www.bom.gov.au/oceanography/tides/dodge/dodge.shtml )

Take lots of aeroguard.... I will say it again.... Take lots of aeroguard

Another couple of spots that might be worth a try is Largs Bay, north of the sailing club (the kite buggy guys use this spot) or even Goolwa ocean beach head east (toward murray mouth) from the car park.

Cheers guys, that's some really good info!

And cisco isn't it annoying with questions that don't end with a question mark.
