Today the sun came back to Melbourne after a week of crappy cold and wet weather so I took the opportunity to try out my new camera.

It's just a little point and shoot waterproof camera.. The Olympus 3000.. It doesn't have that stupid lens cover flap that gets stuck.. It takes a normal SD card.. It charges without having to take the battery out.. and it does video in HD.. All for about $250.

I took these before I headed off.

I spotted something way off in the distance.. It caught my eye because it would flash as the sun reflected off it.

I paddled way out to it because I wanted to know what it was.. At first I thought it was a floating gas bottle.

It was pretty heavy and I though about the damage that it would do if a speed boat was to hit it so I dragged in onboard.

I then thought that it might be a boat petrol tank.. or maybe even a beer keg.. Does anyone know?

I paddled back to the breakwater wall and placed it on the rocks above the high water mark.

I snapped a few more pictures to test out the camera.. The pictures quality seems pretty good for a cheap camera.

Man if you need a BBQ go back and get it ,they make a good one , cut it half , longways and weld some stainless legs on it. you will just need a bit of detailed work on the inside to float the plate and install the gas appliance.

Hi DJ,

Thanks for posting the pics. Always gets me inspirded. One day I'm get myself a 14ft board.

How "waterproof" do you reckon the new waterproof camera is - could you take it in the surf?

Thanks

Thanks..

I don't see why it shouldn't be able to be used in the surf.. I will be.. Here's some more info on the camera.

JB HiFi have a special on them now for $295.. I went in and said that I can get one for $250 on the net and asked if they can match it.. and they did.

How much did you pay?

Got off Dick Smiths allegedly $495 but on special $395 so probly not such a good deal as you but by the time you factor in exchange rates probly only $50 aussie more than
you paid & it is gizzie after all
For another $100 i could be like bp & get a new gopro (suspect he will only find a second hand one in his dreams :),,,,but a bit high profile for my tastes

The Olympus Tough 3000 can be found on ebay for US$180 plus US$25 for postage. Dunno what that is in NZ pesos but it's the same shipping price as to Oz.

I buy just about everything from eBay and it is pretty much risk free. The few times I have had a problem I got one of:
- new product no questions asked and I did not have to return the dud.
- new product and the vendor paid for the return shipping.
- partial refund on cheap item that didn't do everything it was supposed to.
- refund from PayPal when vendor did not reply to emails
- refund from vendor if I did not like the item (sometimes the vendor refunded shipping as well)

The only problem is the 1-2 week wait for the goods to be delivered.

Make sure electronic devices come with a 110-240 volt charger. You usually get a US-Oz adapter for the plug.

OK so for US$225 i could buy the camera on ebay (including postage). That equates to NZ$311
So for another nz$84 i can buy it off a local merchant with a 12 month warranty.
Much easier to enter into warranty issues with a local retailer than someone on ebay i suspect

There are some products and brands that are no cheaper on ebay so I buy those locally, or if I need to talk with people in person to research the product.

Usually products on ebay are 20% cheaper and often 60-70% cheaper. Some electronic gadgets are virtually free on ebay ($1-2 including postage for USB gadgets.)
