Maybe modern death-leashes are the main reason for this ?
When I say 'modern', I'm talking about death-leashes that have that sliding release mechanism on them.
(The old death-leashes had no release, they were fixed hard onto your body.)
This sliding mechanism release seems to be an industry standard now on all brands of death-leashes.
(Possibly it's the only industry standard in the whole of kitesurfing.)
lol.
So, how many folks out there stick duct tape over their death-leash sliding release ?
I ask this cause they accidently release all the time.
Of course duct tape really isn't the solution to the problem, hey ?
... cause duct tape gets sticky and yucky.
So to all the unhookers, make sure your sliding thing is pushed down and seated properly before you do your tricks.
If it's 5mm out, it will accidently release under load.

I had two kites get away from me last season, one floated over a large group of beach goers while the bar bounced on the heads and teeth of children and adults then headed toward the busy highway luckily wraped itself on a tree.

No serious damage, caused by a miss matched product from the local shop and the wrong procedure be me. So So Lucky !!

The other one was my fault, always attach the leash to your harness no matter how light the wind is, modern chicken loops do still have a fault in design can't trust them.

Both happened within a few day from each other, can't remember any other time but it would be over 6 years or more.

Hey Guys,

The best leash to get is the Cabrinha leash, its got the same mushroom style release like the depower line uses.

I have had mine for 2.5 years now and it was second hand when i got it and I have never had an accidental release yet. But saying that I need a new one as the elastic has deteriorated and I reckon the webbing is next.

Check them out.

Cheers
Rich

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it seems ALL of them do it... I have seen cabrinha ones do it too. Don't get me wrong, I love the cabs, ride them myself, but yeah I have been searching for a good leash for a while...

cab one's sh!t, big bulgy thing flopping around behind u is easy to hit when passing.. push away system is also sh!t (Slingy, lf, naish etc etc etc) except the lf one seems to be pretty stiff..

best leash i found to date is the airush velcro leashes, just make sure u assemble it n have hte lil tab thingy on end of velcro loop through the metal ring thingo and boom you got yourself a bomb proof leash that never undoes itself.

Some harnesses have a Q/R on the handlepass line - easier to reach at the side of the harness, and it doesn't get in the way.

I agree the 08 airush release never came undone but then you needed tension on it to release the velcro and can you still get them anyway

I had a slider style all last season and it was perfect. It is pretty snug and not likely to ping open unwanted (unlike the predecessor I had - a double layer velcro release ).

Early on with my new kite/safety leash set-up I got into a situation where I had to bail and release the kite deliberately (had already stuffed my foot from a wave driving me down onto reef and about to cop the 2nd sizeable wave right on the head) the sliding release worked perfectly and super quick.

Sorry but i am a fan of sliders. The good thing in a pinch is to find the clip/harness ring so easy and just slide your release straight off from there.

The unreliable velcro leash I had previously was not super difficult but required a fair bit more time/co-ordination to locat the velcro lifter. In some cases that may mean fumbling or taking yout eyes off the kite/situation to look at the release.

TIME = GETOUTTATHESH!TLIVETOSEEANOTHERDAY I reckon.

Two thumbs up for snug sliders I reckon. So easy to release when you want to but not prone to release when you don't.

BTW - I check my release every few weeks but don't make a habit of undoing it a lot as that may stretch the fit and lead to accidental release.

Hey Charlie I had 2 slightly diff Airush leashes and one was a shocker (er.. 2006-2007?) but they next one wasn't flash either.

The velcro numbers do take more luck or co-ordination to get free than a slider and if your getting rolled in a wave or similar you just wanna be able to release as easy as poss.
