Hey DJ,

from what Jacko, Angie, Starlet etc say a large proportion of the 13000+ US boards live in the back of trucks in on Maui

Yo might even say the Frenchies have us Gonged?

I think there might be a few more than that only about six of us on the east coast ,there a lot around The Bay of Plenty / Auckland .
I have to admit its not as popular , get all the small minded negative stuff .
Most mornings I surf on my own or with Gizzie its good to be forgotten

Hey Phil, interesting stats! The French are about 2 years behind us, or they were last year. Even though there are more of them they don't hug the coastline like we do.
I doubt they are ahead in numbers. As for Aus. under 1000? No way!

Hey Andrew,

I didnt think it was right either however thats what the figures from their website suggest?

This is unique hits not number of boards sold etc.

There were 15 different sups in the og area just one morning last weekend. Often quite a few flat water boards on the Barwon now too.

Thats why I am asking what people think.

Your right there, as i take all the waves i might as well make up for 100 supers

Speaking of waves, A nice 2 ft today going for a surf soon, I am trying hard to learn to swing the board back off the wave and continue the paddle

Vids make it look easy

Why don't the Nash boys tell us an approximate number of their sales from the last 12mths - then we can guesstimate their market share and make a more informed number. I would hazard a guess that most people own 1.4 SUPs (DJ has 5 at last count) whilst lots of others only have one.

So maybe we can say if Nash sold 500 boards to new people and they are 35% of market then there were 1,428 sold in Aust. And then we can say as most people own 1.4 boards...then we had 1,020 new SUPs join us in the last year.

Maybe we can get fancy and fit a distribution to these numbers and speculate the total number of SUPs going forward. Then we can probably trump the French.

Anyway just a thought on a slow Friday in the home office. Although I did mange to hit the water this morning for my first SUP session in a month and loved it. Although was a little wobbly when hit by the cross chop whilst waiting for the next 2 footer to come my way.

The speed at which Naish and Starboard and PSH get new product into Australia suggests we are a stronger market than these figures suggest. Hopefully SIC, Bark, and others realise this soon too, so we can get a look at more of these boards in bigger numbers.

I'd reckon they seem pretty right from my own limited knowledge.

It's easy from within the bubble to think that bubble is as big as the whole world.

Gotta agree (damn it) and if anything I would think that the US would be even higher given the massive sales of sups/accessories to inland states over there in the past 18months. I reckon it would be safe to say that there are more sups being paddled on US inland waters/rivers than the rest of the world combined.

Interesting that South Africa doen't even feature...there are probably 500 in SA, but nearly impossible to say without the importers putting their numbers together

I agree, there are a good number of Saffa's who have taken up the paddle, but maybe they not that internet savvy when it comes to visiting the US Mag site. And the Australian market appears to be very underestimated. The only way to get a better idea is from the manufactures.
I recon SurfTech should have a pretty good idea based on the destination of shipments.

It would also be nice to see which markets are the fastest gorwing

The size of the sport in the USA (any sport) blows me away but i was told the economy of Australia is smaller than the economy of London , and the Economy of California alone was bigger than the entire Economy of the UK !!

as confirmation of our small size I was told by the Australian powerbar rep that more bars are sold in East Los Angeles than the whole of Australia
