I'd recommend going to a few kite shops (disclaimer: yes I work for SOS) and asking for advice. Even if you don't buy anything, ask them for opinions about what you should get. And then gather all the help you get off the forums and with all that knowledge combined you should have a hard time buying the wrong kite!

Personally I'd recommend a 10 or 12m. 10 will be easier initially, but it won't be enough in the future. I own a 10 and a 14 and that's a good combination, but if you don't want to buy two kites then a 12 will do. As a beginner you're going to need to practice in the lighter end of its wind range.

What does everyone else think?

sounds like good advice there andy. a 12 is the kite size to have in perth and its a good size to start on for most people
