Great Barrier Reef Offshore Waters Forecast: Bowen to Yeppoon

Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system lies offshore over the far southern Coral Sea and
is expected to intensify during today and Thursday as it moves into the Tasman
Sea. A second low centre may develop offshore of the southeast Queensland coast
this evening. A slow moving high pressure system over the far southern Tasman
Sea will maintain a ridge through Queensland for the remainder of this week.
Strong to gale force winds and large east to southeasterly swells will result
over far southern Queensland waters.

Forecast for Thursday 28 August until midnight

Winds: SW to SE 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 20 to 25 knots in the evening and
reaching 25 to 30 knots south of Gannet Cay.
Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres, increasing to 2.5 to 3.0 metres in the south in the evening.
Swell: SE 1.5 to 2.0 metres in the Capricorn Channel, increasing to 2.5 metres late in
the day.

Forecast for Friday 29 August

Winds: S to SE 15 to 25 knots, reaching 25 to 30 knots south of Gannet Cay in the
morning. Winds tending E to SE 10 to 15 knots from the southwest during the
evening.
Seas: 1.7 to 2.2 metres in general, but initially 2.5 to 3.0 metres in the south in
the morning. Seas abating to 1.2 metres in the evening.
Swell: SE 2 to 3 metres in the Capricorn Channel.

Forecast for Saturday 30 August
Winds: SE 10 to 15 knots, becoming variable less than 10 knots south of Gannet Cay in
the afternoon.
Seas: Up to 1.2 metres.
Swell: SE 1 to 2 metres in the Capricorn Channel.

Weather Situation - Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria
A slow moving high pressure system over the far southern Tasman Sea will extend
a ridge through over the Gulf waters, weakening during Saturday.

Weather Situation - North Queensland
A slow moving high pressure system over the far southern Tasman Sea will extend
a ridge through northern Queensland waters, weakening during Saturday.

Weather Situation - South Queensland
A complex low pressure system lies offshore over the far southern Coral Sea,
while a second low centre lies over water near the southeast Queensland border
and is expected to intensify today. A tight pressure gradient exists between a
slow moving high pressure system over the far southern Tasman Sea and the
complex low pressure system, easing during Saturday.

South East Gulf of Carpentaria: QLD-NT Border to Cape Keerweer

Forecast for Thursday 28 August until midnight
Winds: Southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore in the
late morning. Winds tending southeast to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the
evening. Seas: 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the
afternoon.

Forecast for Friday 29 August
Winds: South to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots tending east to southeasterly in
the morning then tending southeast to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots in the
evening. Winds reaching up to 25 knots offshore north of Kowanyama in the late
morning. Seas: 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre during the afternoon.

Forecast for Saturday 30 August
Winds: Southeast to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots tending northeast to
southeasterly during the morning then becoming variable about 10 knots during
the evening. Seas: Around 1 metre.

North East Gulf of Carpentaria: Cape Keerweer to Crab Island

Forecast for Thursday 28 August until midnight
Winds: East to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore
south of Weipa in the morning. Winds tending south to southeasterly in the
early afternoon. Seas: 1 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday, then
increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening.

Forecast for Friday 29 August
Winds: East to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots tending south to southeasterly in
the evening. Seas: 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to 1 metre around midday,
increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore north of Cullen Point by early evening.

Forecast for Saturday 30 August
Winds: East to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots tending south to southeasterly
during the afternoon. Seas: Around 1 metre, decreasing below 1 metre during the
afternoon or evening.

Torres Strait

Forecast for Thursday 28 August until midnight
Winds: Southeasterly 20 to 25 knots. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell:
Southeasterly 1 to 1.5 metres outside the reef.

Winds: Southeasterly 20 to 25 knots. Seas: 1.5 to 2 metres. Swell: East to
southeasterly below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres outside the reef.

Peninsula Coast: Sharp Point to Cape Melville

Forecast for Thursday 28 August until midnight
Winds: Southeasterly 20 to 25 knots. Seas: 1.5 to 2.5 metres. Swell:
Southeasterly around 1 metre outside the reef, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres
later in the evening.

Winds: South to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 30 knots offshore
south of Cape Capricorn during the afternoon and evening. Winds tending south
to southeasterly in the late morning and early afternoon. Seas: 1 to 1.5
metres, increasing to 2 to 3 metres south of Cape Capricorn. Swell: Northeast
to southeasterly 1 to 2 metres, tending east to southeasterly 2 to 4 metres
later in the evening.

south of Cape Capricorn early in the morning. Winds tending east to

to 1.5 metres around midday. Swell: Northeast to southeasterly below 1 metre,
increasing to 2 to 4 metres offshore.
