where we sail at Esperence its 500m offshore for flares. had a mate whos engin concked off Bandy creek only about 1km off the beach . the daytime flare were useless and they were saved by using a make up mirror to flash the shore.
Question for epirb knowledgable people, Does the epirb signal identify the unit or just a general signal?

my understanding is that the new EPIRBS need to be registered and each one identifies the owner and location... But I could be wrong.. (happened once b4)

Yeah your right KK. When you get an epirb now, you have to register it with your details. So when it goes off for example, they can ring you at home to see if the boat is actually in the water, or if some drunk idiot has stolen it.
Also got your boat details on it so if there are many people on the water , they dont have to check EVERY boat.
The search radius on the new models is heaps better to, used to be a 20km radius, now its about 5km.
Hope that helps.

we are planning to take an epirb on our beach sailing trip to Eucla in Jan.
I suppose we'd better give the details to the Local police who are meeting us at Eucla, in case they send a plane to search offshore.
