It amazes me that in these days of incredible border security a boat can get all the way down the wa coast and not be detected til it enters the harbour?????? How much money do the spend on this sh$t????? It would be just as effective to post a couple of people at the mouth of the harbour with signal fires. The current money may be better spent elsewhere aparently.

Did they remember to pack their wind/kitesurfing gear?

Should feel pretty stupid if they forgot to....

Yeah the whole idea border security is a joke. Unfortunately its a joke that costs the Australian taxpayers billions of dollars. What does the Australian taxpayer get in return? Nothing much besides the warm feeling knowing that the average border security worker is probably paid twice as much to do a quarter of the work as the average taxpayer.

So, what should be done about it? Its a big border, and you can't run barbed wire the whole length.

It shows initiative. The boat people seem to have figured out that arriving at Christmas Island is too difficult and if they set course for Dunsborough, they just might get here undetected.

How do you know what the border security people get, and can you arrange an interview for me? The working conditions sound ideal.

Not bad salaries and conditions but not enough for some as evident with corruption in the Customs Service.

Plus all the money being wasted on those offshore detention centres. Why on earth is all that money being wasted on Christmas Island? By any stretch of the imagination, Christmas Island is not part of Australia geographically.

I heard on the radio that the people on the boat want to go to New Zealand. Why don't they should buy some fuel for their boat, stock up on water as well as supplies and keep going?

To be honest, I don't really know. I think originally these locations were supposedly 'not quite Australia', but that doesn't sound right.

I suspect it is because Christmas Island is so close to Indonesia, that these boat people would land there and try and claim asylum. I guess if they are landing there, then it makes sense to house them there.

The Chinese I think it is, have the best practice in place for Boat People.... If they spot them crossing into the boarder around them, they give 2 warnings that the boat will be fired upon.

On the third warning they shoot a nice sized round beside the boat. if they do not turn around they sink the boat, pick up the people and send them home again. no food, ** accommodation and poor service, makes the boat people think twice about going there again..

About 25 years ago a Chinese tug boat arrived on the mid north coast of NSW, full of Chinese. The boat which was pretty big, washed up on Scotts Head Beach, which is a bit south of Nambucca Heads. We went and had a look at it. I think this was around the time of the Tiananemin Square massacre and when Bob Hawke had a little cry over it. Funny thing is he is over there now enjoying the hospitality of those murderers.

The Chinese apparently took off into the bush and they were all picked up by the coppers. They were dressed in suits and business clothing.

Anyway who would want to escape to China? North Koreans?

As I understand it, Christmas Island has been 'excised' from the Australian immigration zone, the mainland has not. I suspect that may be why they made the extra effort to get to the mainland...

One would think that Gina would have the courtesy to at least meet her first load of 457's in person and welcome them to Aus. That's just poor form[}:)]

More along the lines of "it doesn't look like Auckland, keep going"; apparently the silly buggers were/are heading for NZ but had engine trouble. More than a little navigation trouble too as they didn't allow for the 7.69 million square km land mass of Australia that was between Sri Lanka and New Zealand...

todays report was that they sailed straight from srilanka and swung south under the patrol zones.
I get a sense that the smugglers are waking up to a potential new route,
and cutting out all the indonesian middlemen, thereby increasing their profitmargins
sounds like good business sense to me

Was there a decent leg spinner on board? We could pay for a plane trip to England in late June.

Not the first time in Gero for a reffo boat. Not sayin good or bad but it has happened before. Many moons ago there was another refugee boat landed in the same spot with a heap of Vietnamese on board. mid to late 70s I think. FOO LONG 11 I think it was called from my muddled memory.
2 boats in 40 years.
Awesome bit of seamanship if they came straight across. Timing was pretty good as well looks like there is a cyclone brewwing up at the moment.

The sponsor name on the boat is the company that gave the boat to help them after the tsunami, they are going to be very impressed when the boat is going to be burnt! I would'nt mind to salvage it..... probabely nice construction made of iron wood? and very seaworthy, nice shell that can be made into a big cruiser with plenty of accomodation. Where do I apply?

^ that one was an illegal fishing boat.

https://open.abc.net.au/projects/now-and-then-series-2-44un7gn/contributions/fu-long-ii-by-brian-keeble-87gs2zr

Skwinty knows a bloke that was surfing pipeline at the Chapman River mouth when the Fu Long II dropped in, or so the story goes.

More of a story me thinks! it went up during the night. Ironically after spending years rusting away moored outside the foreshore, it was sold and ended up being on the TV series patrol boat as an illegal fishing boat.
