I remember a simpler time when I could just take off into the Tasmanian Wilderness for 7 days without a worry in the world.

These days you kind of feel tied to your family, job, mobile phone, email, and seabreeze ().

I remember one trip in Tassie, I walked the entire length of the Overland Track in 4 days, plus 2 peaks, The Labyrinth, and walked the Lake StClair section that many people get a ferry for. Then went and got on the bus to go and do Frenchmans Cap in 3 days. With a reverse charges call to mum from Derwent Bridge to say the Overland Track was great, and I was pushing on to Frenchmans.

On that trip, I remember getting to some huts at say 2pm when some people had already arrived, decided to settle in. But young and stupid me, I would just push through to the next hut. Go Go Go... but since going back, it is nicer to take you time, and finish walking at 2-3 in the arvo. Or take a long lunch, and finish at 4/4.30 latest.

I remember when I could drive to the beach without going through 1/2 dozen tolls and there wouldn't be much traffic, I could park without paying, and have a whole break to myself.

I remember when Harvey Norman sales people would call you up after buying something and ask if you were happy with it, JB HiFi only had a couple shops selling car stereos.

I remember when we had a local butcher who would give you a taste of his latest cured meat, the green grosser had awesome fruit/veg, and it wouldn't rain non FARKING stop for 3 months.

I remember when Sundays were quiet, shops were closed and the streets deserted.

Hmmm, all this was only a couple years ago.

Yep, nostalgia is not what it used to be.

Now it's parking meters everywhere you go. Some of the beaches look like you're in another country altogether. Going to the restaurant is a day's pay. All the food is 'gourmet' now in order to justify the price, even pizza. People don't use fists to fight in bars anymore: it's all knives and guns and cowardly glassing. You have to wait for people to be done texting to ask them how it is going (unless you text them too).

Ah, I forgot: and what happened to natural breasts ??

Nahhh, life is so much better now, far more options for anyone able to adapt. I can't imagine life without the internet and mobile technologies.

What you are talking about is getting older and having more commitments. Sure life is more complicated, but the point I'm making is you can still do that.

All those options, and more, are still easily accessible for those that seek them.

Nowadays you can run a successful international business from Koo Wee Rup - that would have been near impossible back in the day when you were trecking Tas.

Were you all pissed up when you started this thread?

When I take a sabatical during Autumn, I'm planning on going up the North West WA coast to shoot me a pile of Dugons. I'll drag em up the beach and make a big pile of dead mammals, then I'll climb up top and get me a souvenir photo drinking a can of VB that I'll post right here on Seabreeze - that'll be proof you can still live the dream of a simpler time in 2012
