Sign up to iTunes for free and be "limited to whatever it offers". Which is a containership load these days.
Sure, I guess there's no shortage of content. I more meant that you're locked in to the apple ecosphere. Great if you love it and have lots of apple products and you're happy to play by their rules (48hr DRM for one example), pay their prices, jump through their hoops.
Personally iTunes (and the 5 or so add on programs that it insists on installing) gives me the shudders. I've had to use it for a stupid iPod my wife was given. Gone now and no further apple products will come through my door.
To contrast to Apple ecosphere which gives you itunes or... itunes, the WD offers apps from all sorts of companies. As I mentioned, unlimited free ABC on demand via iView. (streamed, no PC required). But also there's this list and new ones being added all the time
YouTube™, Spotify™, DailyMotion, Vimeo®, PlayJam, Picasa Web Albums™, TuneIn Radio and MLB.TV®, as well as the recently announced AOL HD™ and Red Bull TV™ service. For example there's one not on that list called indie movies that has about 50 of the "best" indie movies on demand for free.
Xbox also has apps incl. iView, SBS on demand, Ch9 on demand and possibly 7 too. As well as a whole bunch of other tv channel apps.
