It's that time of the year again.

Fellow patriotic Australians feel the need to buy cheap plastic Australian flags. You know the ones. Really easy to install - just wind the car window up and the base of the flag wedges in.

Great idea, except that it is the one day of the year that Australians love to go cruising with their mates and/or families to the beach, BBQ's and fireworks. And, on this special national holiday more than any other, it is culturally ingrained that all occupants wind their windows down for at least part of the journey.

The patriotic display finishes with the Australian flag being released onto the road at speed, to be run over repeatedly, before settling on the verge next to the Macca's bag and to officially become litter (or would that be 'flitter').

Hey, well it is a disposable world - even for patriotism

The 27th of January has a newly emerging tradition for me. Spotto. I count the number of busted up national flags on the roadside on the way to work.

There is no way in HELL that you will get an Aussie flag on my car.
After seeing the way the rest of the tools drive around on Australia Day.

My wife became an Australian citizen last Australia day (after 30 years permanent residency) The local federal member of parliament actually seemed proud to be handing out the crappy little Chinese made flag. To add insult to injury the flag is/was not even correctly printed,

I support the Eureka flag as more representative of Australia pity

The builders union grabbed it I cringe at our national anthem

do support " Hey True Blue " I have trouble with the NZ flag and ours.

We need an official anthem and flag, and a sporting anthem and flag.

I support indigenous people, however not their flag.

I once saw an Australian flag with the union jack removed and replaced with kangaroo similar to the Qantas style, looked very good I thought.

Saw one with the Aboriginal flag where the union jack was as well, not bad.

Must admit Im not into all this flag waving, its a bit ott I think IMHO

I did it,, attached one of those free, plastic aussie flags to me car,, wanted to see how the other half lived.. First thing i noticed was, its really noisy and starts to fall apart nearly instantly,,, then the bad stuff.. Began to listen to crap music, drive badly (had an urge to do burnouts),, got aggressive and started drooling.... wanted to get an old ford/holden and dump it on my front lawn and start producing meth in my shed.....

Anyway, all went away once I removed it,, handed over to a 'new' Aussie, fresh from Sweden,, she was stoked,, drove off happily singing to Farnsy/Barnsy etc and ran over some nuns... shouting Happy Oztraya Day Feckers!

At the SCG a few years ago with a whole heap of very entertaining Poms in the stands.

The constantly repeated ozzy ozzy ozzy oi oi oi from the moron section in reply to well co-ordinated singing and general humour had worn very very thin by the end of the day.

Sums up the mentality in two words oft repeated. ****en retards!

Drove into the city yesterday (around 50k's). Had to pick up one flag lying in the gutter at the end of the driveway (I live in a fairly quiet suburban area but I guess it was too much bother to stop). Ran over two more along the freeway.

you can't seriously want this as our anthem? vegemite and sponge cake? its a good song but it makes about as much sense as the macarena for a national anthem.

Hey True Blue, don't say you've gone
Say you've knocked off for a smoko
And you'll be back la-ater on
Hey True Blue, Hey True Blue

Give it to me straight, face to face
Are you really disappearing
Just another dy-ying race
Hey True Blue

True Blue, is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad, is it a co-ockatoo
Is it standin' by your mate when he's in a fight
Or just Vegemi-ite
True-ue-ue Blue, I'm a-asking you

Hey True Blue, can you bear the load
Will you tie it up with wire
Just to keep the show on the road
Hey True Blue
Hey True Blue, now be Fair Dinkum

Is your heart still there
If they sell us out like sponge cake
Do you rea-eally care
Hey True Blue

True Blue, is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad, is it a co-ockatoo
Is it standin' by your mate when she's in a fight
Or just Vegemi-ite
True-ue-ue Blue, I'm a-asking you...

For those of you who dont like Australia day, stay at work!

Whether the flags are made in China or Botswana who cares, just get into the spirit of the day, be nice to fellow Aussies no matter what their origin of birth is and dont get smashed and bother others.

Happy Aussie day

Yes they do silly things......... Dont we all????

I hear where your coming from and I agree on most of your points but I just don't think I need to prove my loyalty by buying a Chinese made flag, it doesn't sit right, if there were an Aussie made one I would, Happy China Australia day people.

100% for one day of the year it cant be hard to atleast have the flags MADE
here I know people will cry this down but its not that hard people i have no probs paying a reasnoble price for one there must be an orginisation who could do this for one dam day a year.
