scary! reminds me of the days when I used to use a PC with Windows. There are quite a few keyboards I abused in my time...

... recently switched to a Mac and all my anxiety and anger is gone.

Nothing wrong with XP :) (this computer has 64days record uptime). We used to have imacs when I lived in college dorms, no joke you could not go 30min on those pieces of crap without them freezing and crashing. End result of 5 imacs (and one year), 21 replacement keyboards, 13 cd rom drives and by the end not one had a power button that wasn't missing. The windows PCs, mint. Case in point a macs can be crap too.

7 years ago I would have agreed with you... a lot has changed since Apple switched to the Intel platform. OSX has grown up and the new machines work flawless.

OS9 and the first edition of OSX did suck royally in comparison to WinXP. However, that was about 7 to 8 years ago... a life time in computer terms.

I switched in the end because I got sick of rebuilding my computer every 6 months (or 3 months for Vista) simply because Windows update broke something. Now that most applications are available on both OSX and Windows there is little argument against switching. But hey each to their own... I now keep my sanity after a days work that's all that matters to me.

Funny you should say that stehsegler it was about 8 years ago hehe. My brother has a macbook pro and i must admit it's probably the best laptop you can buy. That said (and the mac lovers will probably kill me for saying this) when I use it, I always just run XP :o Partly because it's what I use everyday, partly because of the fact that the close/minimise buttons on the top program bar are on the opposite side on the Mac. When you use XP all day at work something as small as that can really **** you.

That's a classic compilation! I worked with a guy once out of a home office. He put a printer through the window.

OSes: You know normally I'd just say "Who really cares?". An OS just launches programs, really. I know, I know, there's more to it (I'm an ERP dev) than that but from a functional point of view it's all they really do.

Start > Some Program > Do stuff

But now I'm using Vista... man Vista SUX. In one word - irritating. I hate it. It's sucking up 500MB of RAM just to show me a desktop picture, a task bar and the time. WTF?! And from time-to-time the hard drive will go nuts, can't see anything in processes that explains it. And it's always asking for confirmation - they really went overboard with the security.

I wish they'd make a 'lite' version of windows. One that just talks to hardware and launches apps. Nothing else.

I tried Linux/Ubuntu but in the end I just kept booting up into XP. I might use the 'downgrade to XP disk' that came with this laptop. Says something that.

evlPanda,

Windows Lite ? It's called Win XP? FYI, there is a little tool out there called nLite. It's allows you to build a thin custom installation of Win XP. I allows you to strip out all that stuff you will probably never use and a) speed up install while b) reducing the amount of memory need to run. You will need an original Win XP disc to use it though.

I am currently using it in Parallels under a Mac OS X and in that combo Win XP Lite simply flies.

CJW,

There are some little differences (such as the one you point out) which take time to get used to. It took me about a week to really get a hang of all the little differences in controlling the OS. I still run Win XP in Parallels primarily for Outlook (got a out 3 Gbyte of outlook data) plus a couple of extra apps where there is now OSX equivalent. Overall though my productivity has increased. I seem to spend less time slamming keyboards against the wall and fixing OS problems. Instead I now actually can concentrate on what I earn my living with and get on with it.

Using them for audio recording I used to be Mac snob.

Until I bought one with my own dollars that is... never again. They are overrated (even using Intell chips now - ha ha ha), overpriced and overpretentious. Gee aren't they sexy lookin though... style over substance - I prefer the opposite (explains why I wear sensible jumpers )

Far more choices in software (and cheaper) for PC. The only benefit of a Mac is less virus hassles as less are created with Mac in mind.

If you set up XP right and don't go near porn (yeh how many can honestly say they haven't) then life with a XP is rosy indeed.

When was the last time you heard of a laptop costing twice as much for inferior performance then having the audacity to overheat and actually catch fire!! (Oh that would be Mac of course) Yes they were using 3rd party batteries although they were supplied new with the new Mac... suckers

Macs latest release: The iKnob - It doesn't do anything much that a normal Knob does but it costs heaps more, comes white and is tres cool to whip out in public places for all to admire. You just take it out and play with it all day long thinking how cool everybody thinks you and your sexy iKnob are...

only problem is that you can't buy a new PC with Windows XP.

also, the problem is not viruses that make them selfs known... the real problem is when your computer suddenly becomes part of a boot net because it got infected with a spy bot from the driver disc that came with your cheap chinese peripheral.

Virus Scanner? Only work with known spy bots.

anyway... keep buying PCs... means lower install base of Mac and hence less interest by hackers to build viruses and spy bots. Means I can stay in La La land.

You can buy the computer without windows already installed on it and then just install windows XP instead of vista yourself. Use your own, mates or even works software disc to do it.

I was actually talking about legally using the software rather than stealing it...

That isn't ilegal is it lol??? If you have bought the software before, or borrowing it from a mate it's not stealing. Taking it from work or downloading it from the net would be, but if you or someone else has bought the Windows XP software disc, then theres nothing wrong with it is there??? If you have bought a computer before with XP you should already have the windows software disc yourself anyway.

Stehsegler that nlite program sounds sweet, will have to try that out on the next install. Not really keen on touching this one yet as it works flawlessly, don't want to invite the unwelcome :P

I assume your mate uninstalled his copy then... and did you buy Windows XP Pro or Home edition.

... at the end of the day of course it's up to you. But what generally rubs me the wrong way is when people tell me that PCs are cheaper than Macs when they really mean I can get tons of pirated software for my PC.

Oh btw, next time I see your windsurf gear sitting on the beach I'll be using that... hey, I am not stealing. I got the same gear in my car. I am just to lazy to rig up.

OK so if you have bought a computer before in your life, by your morlas you would have bought the software aswell that time anyway, so just used YOUR OWN software that you already have to install. That IS NOT stealing. Home edition ovcourse that is what comes with most laptops, but sometimes you pay the extra for pro if you wan't.

Problem solvered. Just makes it a bit more annoying your way, but it is correct.

I would be telling porkies if I said I have never used a cracked program. I do attempt to stay clear these days though.

What I was talking about was that (generally) if you want a photo editor, CD/DVD labeller (or whatever takes ya fancy) there is more choice - and probably therefore - better pricing than in Mac land.

Can't wait to get a new iKnob though... I hear they come in white but I will wait and pay double just to be 1st with a real funky colour. Might go and sleep out to be 1st in line right now....

But wouldn't it be great if you could make a perfect copy of his windsurfing gear in about 20 minutes and use that instead?

I don't know. I think software like Windows is/was so popular because it IS/WAS copied. Just look at Quake for example.

Also try out ThinkFree Office. It's free and it's working out beautifully for me, and all files are stored online, hurrah!

I used to think the same... however, I found that most software now either comes in cross platform versions or there is a similar program available from a different company. It turned out once I stopped being stuck in my old ways open started being open to a new approach I suddenly found new angles to get my work done in less time. At the end of the day I am trying to spend as little time as possible in front of that box and instead go out sailing.

RE the software you mentioned:

- Photo editor:
The best photo editor around at the moment is Adobe Lightroom and that's available for both Mac and PC... same goes for Photoshop CS3 and Gimp
- CD labeler: I am using what came with my Canon printer. It's dual platform and the same of for Mac and PC. I seem to remember the same goes for Epson printers.

There are some notable exceptions such as Autocad... but then again you could use Archicad which is easier to use anyway.
