Wow. Great spot but close your mouth. Really grossed us out the obvious sewage spewing out while we where there at the "world class kiting' location. It's actually pretty small space for all those kiters.

yeah he's talkin about the same thing on couple of other islands as well. El Nido etc.
Pretty hard on the locals for a while but worth it in the long run.

There has been raw sewerage going straight in the sea from cliff locations near Uluwatu for decades. Depends on sea conditions and time of year as to whether you'll notice it.

the rubbish on the beaches come from their own rivers flushed out on the monsoonal rains (our summer) as you said. It just piles up in the canals where they throw it (when not burning it) in the dry season, hence why it's less dirty looking in the water April-sept.

The problem is huge and super sad.
and I've only looked at travelling to Boracay (no waves, opted out), but looking just on scale, the financial cost of pulling that Duterte move to sort Bali out would surely be orders of magnitude greater.

yeah I stopped surfin in Bali about 10 years ago for 2 reasons, the smell of **** all over me when I came in from a surf and the second wave of bombings.
Will probably go back at some stage but in no hurry.
I work in the Philippines and they have their own set of issues with rubbish etc, I just thought it was a pretty gutsy decision to make.

There are not too many people in the world.

If you reduced the population by say 50% there would presumably be 50% less pollution. So we continue to pollute but we just do it at a slower rate.

The end result will be the same, just takes longer to achieve it.

The problem does not lie with the number of people. It lies with the way we do things. Our economic models do not take into consideration the degradation of the environment so the environment gets degraded with little or no consideration.

The solution is to change the way we do things.

That right Japie- the real problem is what the market, and the politicians it sponsors sell us, unlimited consumption of nature in a finite world.

We are collectively the Once-ler and our habits are getting worse not better as we accelerate towards the Olduvian cliff.

A UK article I read recently states that if the US turned vegan, they could feed an extra 390 million people. Not that it is ever going to happen but it shows what a huge difference changing our ways would make. Consumerism is not making us better off, it's destroying us.
