If nothing else it would take 25-45% of people (wild guess!) out of the property ownership / rental market, and even at the lower end that surely would help affordability.

No. Seriously, I left the family nest, then came back when times were tough, then got out as soon as I could for the sake of my own sanity.
I think "Campanilismo" is reasonably alive and well in Aus. A lot of Henry Lawson's writings embodied it. Australians seem to a fairly gregarious lot as exampled by posts on this forum when a member expresses their misfortune.
