^^^ Yes those are perceived downsides to the concept especially in the context of Australian society where they appear to be "bludging off the older generation".

It is really about community spirit and helping one's self and fellow community members rather than big government handouts.

In the wake of the flood here in Bundaberg there are some pretty shocking things going on in the name of "recovery".

Many many people who received the immediate "$1,000 assistance handout", took it straight to the pub and blew it on grog and poker machines.

People in emergency accommodation had meals supplied by one of the leading caterers in town, turned them down saying they weren't good enough. I suppose KFC or Maccas would have been acceptable.

One of the worst things happening is that a host of out of town contractors have been brought in to do recovery work with our local contractors not even getting a look in.

The cost is twice as high what with food and accommodation supplied and the bulk of the money leaves town.

Mostly people are quite capable of solving their own problems and are happier doing that rather than having outsiders do it for them.

If nothing else it would take 25-45% of people (wild guess!) out of the property ownership / rental market, and even at the lower end that surely would help affordability.

Downside - you have to put up with your parents...

My kids are welcome at my home anytime as long as they follow the house rules.

Rule Number One:- Once you have a job and are making a quid, you don't live with us anymore.

No. Seriously, I left the family nest, then came back when times were tough, then got out as soon as I could for the sake of my own sanity.

I think "Campanilismo" is reasonably alive and well in Aus. A lot of Henry Lawson's writings embodied it. Australians seem to a fairly gregarious lot as exampled by posts on this forum when a member expresses their misfortune.
