hey there, my mate and i are heading to bali later this year for some surfing and kitesurfing. we have heard about the potential trouble with riding a scooter without an internation moto licence so we are thinking about hiring a little mini van to get ourselves around. when googling i just find expensive newer model cars for US$ 20-40 per day. im thinking we most be able to find a cheap beat up mini van for around $10 a day for 17 days.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers

Spot is correct! Its all to easy to find a descent driver over there.
Actually Im sure that they'll find you.
If ur still keen for ur own van I would strongly suggest searching one out when you get there.

BOL.

yeh man definitely getting a driver with a van. Alot of the good drivers are driving these suzuki APV's (www.productreview.com.au/listings/suzuki-apv-2005-2018) they are sweet little rides and keep your boards safe. Or these Toyotas

However not alot of them have roof racks so definitely take the soft racks.

If you can't tie knots...tie lots...

Just don't forget to barter I did a few trips from kuta to medewi (about 2.5-3 hours north) one year and most drivers start at about 500K-600K rupiah we got them down to 250K one way.

We found also its better being of indo appearance behind the wheel, if the cops see boards on the roof and whiteys in the car, be prepared to be pulled over.

I usually hire a suzuk1 jimny when I go to Bali for $100 AUS a week. The toyota Kjangs are a bit bigger but more expensive. You "WILL" get pulled over by the cops and recieve a spot fine "just because" dont argue just pay it. I usually carry a bare minimum in cash then I only hand over $20 000RP. Just remember if you hit someone even if its not your fault it will get real ugly and expensive.
Great fun to drive over there though.Lots of weird rules but cool anyway. Take soft racks for sure and a international license from the RAC in Aussie.
