When I put my Clark foam planers up for sale (yes this is a blatant self promotion to try sell them) now I've got that out of the way where I was,

....My mate Ed said to me quite negativaly I thought at the time "you won't sell those planers, nobody here would even know how to use one"

..well he was right I wasted $14 on the add over 300 vews and one half querie?

Do Aussie shapers unlike our American friends just put up with using second rate tools to shape a board or has the evil machine so permeated our shaping culture that nobody needs to learn how to shape a blank properly with the best tools available anymore???

Or perhaps the industry is already dead here.

I'm sure this will get a few carpark legends going

but there is no clark foam to plane any more.

here's an idea: try a dedicated surfing site instead of a windsports one, and maybe you'll get more shapers logging on to look at your ad...or you could keep whinging here.

I'm actually surpriesed no one picked them up. There are a couple well known shapers that lurk and a couple that contribute.

hey thank for you reply stamp, not sooking just stating the obvious, read between the lines nobodys picking up the planer anymore, the hand skills are gone can you shape the thing you ride??? and make a living out of it??

Only last month I paid $5 for an add in the local post office window to try to sell my jousting sticks.

I don't know how many people walked past that window, but not one enquiry.

Don't they realise $800 per stick is super-good value ?

or does nobody know how to joust anymore ?

I have never shaped a surfboard.

I do know a bit about making stuff and getting curves right etc..... and I do know a legend shaper near me uses a garden variety planer.

So are they a necessity?

No not a necessity,

but In the past aussie shapers have not had such a purpose built tool available to them, grubby clark desgned this tool to shape as many blanks as easily as possible,

why?

so he could make and sell more blanks,


so why is it different to a normal wood work makita planer?

nobody has asked that question yet<<where is the breeze police,,,,,

they just learned to use the old makita.... yawn

Wouldn't the best tool available be the evil machine If you were after speed and precision to knock out the same board shape over and over.

I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, but it seems that...

- Clark planers are better than other planers cos they do the job faster...
- Machines that do the job faster than clark planers are evil...

the investment costs for a cnc wouldnt be cheap, the investment cost for the knowledge and experience in board shaping is priceless!!
