I'm so sick of the negativity from the greens predominantly but also other sources as

well.

Children are being fed propaganda at school about the dire straits we are supposed to

be in.

Yet we we live in a time of prosperity, safety and relatively good health.

Here is another positive example of what we are capable of.

All good and well, but I think you might find that that not everyone shares the same prosperity, safety and health that you/I do. Think about it.

We should be proud of ourselves

• Each week approximately 500 people are killed or maimed by mines (this is one person every 22 minutes). Each week, 200 children die as a result of landmines.
• Over 100 million mines are currently active in the poorest countries of the world, with another 100 million in stockpiles. 26 nations are currently riddled with landmines. In Angola and Cambodia there are more landmines than there are people in the population. The countries most mined are:
- Egypt - 23 million
- Iran - 16 million
- Iraq – 10 million
- Afghanistan – 10 million
- Angola – 10 million
- China – 10 million
• In Cambodia alone, there are 35,000 amputees as a result of landmine injuries. In Angola there are 100,000 such amputees. 30% of all landmine casualties require amputation of at least one limb.
• Of the preventable causes of child death, landmines are rank sixth.
• The medical costs of surviving a landmine are estimated at US$8,000 per person. The cost of clearing a landmine is estimated at US$200-$1,000 (Rosenfeld, 2000).

It says in the video that the natural fish stocks were collapsed by over fishing. So now they have to grow their own fish. The doom sayers probably mentioned the fish stocks were in danger of running out..

This is exactly whats happening in australia, marine parks and reserves are the answer.. Guess who oppose the construction of more marine parks.. Not the greens..

Is that what we should do? ignore the Environmentalist Nazis, catch all the fish untill they are gone, then grow them ourselves in our bath tubs??

Barn you seem to constantly want to enter in to debate about subjects. I have posted something that has a positive outcome. That is my opinion.There are some that would explain to you that about one third of Tasmania is on welfare because of the proliferation of reserves and national parks instead of industry. Enough said. I for one have a positive view of our future and look forward to more innovation from the wondrous minds and abilities of men. Oh and I do like National Parks as well.

Thats probably true, I really tried not to post anything. But it is a forum?. My comment was not aimed at starting a debate, it was more a bad attempt at pointing out that sometimes those annoying greens with their negativity have a point. Although I disagree with them on many things, Nuclear, immigration, Backburning to name a few..

(If somebodies employment depends on the need to fell old growth Tassi forrests, then I'd rather pay tax to keep em on welfare.)

Positive thinking, "propaganda": seems to me like standing in the middle of the road as 2 lights are coming in. Perhaps with a bit of luck and not listening to people telling me to consider that they might not be two motorcycles but a truck indeed...

Yeah, in that case I would remain positive too and do nothing, just in case...

It seems to be the way of the world, when I was kid I was convinced that the world would be blown up in a nuke war, that was during the cold war era.

Now kids are being scared into thinking that the world is doomed with climate change.

Its all about control I think

The down fall of the USSR had nothing to do with peace mongers.

Desiderata.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

1. To say that 1/3 of Tasmania is in welfare because of "the proliferation of reserves and national parks instead of industry" is a generalization.

Tasmania has one of the oldest populations in Australia (many are retired after a long working life and are very deserving of their pensions). The major problems faced by young people in Tasmania are those faced by people in remote locations everywhere. ie Large firms centralise head offices in the cities, manufacturing businesses dont want to pay the extra freight from Tasmania. (it costs three times as much to get a container from Tasmania to Sydney as it does from Sydney to Hong Kong.)

The Forestry Industry has been shedding jobs at a massive rate for the last 30 years.

2. That is a great vid on developments in sustainable food in cities but generally Aquaculture operations use wild fish bi-catch to feed the farm fish. This may create problems as aquaculture operations expand.

3. Being critical of the current systems of economical development is a healthy pass time. The best businesses are constantly critical of their own operations though their main aim is profit. A society need to aim for more than just profitability and there is always going to be debate about what those other aims might be. Some of that argument is going to make your brain hurt.....beer does help..

Well you see Elbeau, different time different propaganda, when I was at school (few years ago) the propaganda was spread by a guy in black dress; it did not work because as soon as I was older I rejected all what he tried to hammer in my brain. I believe kids of today are not more naive than the ones of my days and when they'll mature enough they will make they own decisions and reject what was purely propaganda!

I went to cambodia years ago and surprised you can't go anywhere without seeing amputees. I know you're not supposed to give to beggars but one guy, I felt sorry for him and gave him some change. Within about 10 seconds I was surrounded by about 20 to 30 of them.

I nearly spit my milk over that one.. there's only one major source of negativity at the moment and it is, and I quote, "Tony Abbott marching that bulldog grimace up and down the length of the country, like a Cassandra made of old leather and stunted dreams, cawing grim warnings of imminent ruin and destruction at the gates of Troy"

The source of that quote is probably the sanest and best written article I've seen in a long time. Enjoy.

Thanks kiteboy dave, that's the best thing I've read in ages. I had tears down my cheeks reading that one. I like the line

There was also a great line about "so-called solar energy" - because now solar energy is just a theory too. Like gravity, or Adelaide.

and the bit

Then there were the numerous headlines about airfares set to "soar" (geddit!). Well-meaning travellers were interviewed saying higher airfares would make it much harder to afford family holidays. Tres sad, especially when Qantas "said it would need to fully pass on the carbon price to customers, with the price of a single domestic flight ticket to increase on average by about $3.50."

Three dollars. Fifty cents. They currently charge you more than that for a bottle of water. They charge $7.50 to buy a ticket online, $8 for a cup of noodles, $25 to use their check-in counter, and $6 to board the plane first. The best comment left after that article was, "So people won't be able to buy a newspaper for the boarding lounge anymore? Good."
