Back in the early day's of Surfing {60's/ 70's] the Surf Culture was seen as a bohemian alternative pastime which then opened the door in some local communities to indulge in smoking da herb and dabbling in other drugs also, it was seen as an opportunity to enhance the "natural experience" of Surfing
Unfortunately with medical research those who have indulged and continue to do so often are suffering from various forms of Neurosis.
Interesting to read the other day that peak surfing bodies are introducing "drug testing" of all elite athletes and officials at Surf events.
The drugs of choice now are not so simple as dope with performance enhancing steroids, meth amphetamine, cocaine etc etc to enhance ability and to push boundaries of personal achievement, loss of fear and potentially bettering results re financial rewards/sponsorship.
I wonder if testing was introduced some years ago there may have some deaths of elite sports people prevented from occurring?
With the amount of money, glamour and media attention with the contest scene in all aquatic sports be it surfing, kite surfing or even sup events the efforts seen will once again be based upon the athletes natural ability which is the reward by the hard yards of training and not just the concoctions taken.
Personally, I enjoy the notion of seeing such elite athletes perform knowing it is done via a mixture of hard work and ability, to me that's inspirational. and by no means is the inference that all partake, its a small minority
Please note the contents of this is purely a social comment and not intended to offend, just putting it out there, ok

If someone can compete and perform well after a smoke of pot, they need to be given extra points.

i think you will find a lot of people will not be turning up to competitions for unforeseen circumstances. Just as andy had a year off to get of the drugs.... i mean to get his competitive drive back...

Also not the most widely known fact but some big wave surfers have been known to dabble in drugs before going out to help with the mind over matter of catchin humungous waves

I guess you don't take public transport, aeroplanes, or call for the coppers, firies or ambos when in trouble. Nor would you trust nurses and doctors and don't go to them if sick?

You know, the people who stay level headed to provide a service or look after people who are not.

(yes I know now and then there is a few in each occupation who get on the gear, but would you wnat all of them to be bent half the time?)

Typical "legalise it" brigade crap.

^^^^ typical war on drugs crap. most people who "do" drugs do so in moderation and hold jobs ( eg firo, nurse, doctor and so on )

if he had said "I don't trust people who don't drink would you have read "people who are pizzed as all day"??

fair call
yeah no worries.
prohibition has been such a resounding success, let's criminalize everything

If we as a society were capable of getting rid of illicit drugs this would be an argument worth having.
The "legalize it ( or not)" debate never gets anywhere because the keep it criminal team seems to confuse Fighting a war on drugs with winning a war on drugs.
If I thought the war on drugs was anything but a total failure that has caused more pain and suffering than the drug use it fights then I would say you have a good point Mark, till then , not so much

or is it just that you got those huge nasal cavities in your avatar from overdoing the blow?

Hi dinsdale, I will keep it short due to being at work but for example:

Mex drug war,
"No one knows exactly how many people have died in this war. The government released a tally of "deaths due to criminal rivalry" late last year, a total of 34,612. Despite promises of updates, it has been silent since."

source:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/americas/after-5-years-mexicos-drug-war-still-rages/2011/12/10/gIQAIocUlO_story.html

not to mention the "side effects" of being thrown in jail on otherwise law abiding members of society

disclaimer, I in no way want to belittle the major problems that drug ABUSE causes in our community . just think it is time to try something else.

apologies also for using a US example but it was easy and as we keep being told it is a global economy these days.
