Spud shed wangara meat and veggies are cheap

Don't forget the crims at IGA.
Everytime there's a proposal for deregulated shopping hours over here, they start pettitioning their customers to sign against it, saying that it is not sustainable for shops to be open long hours blah blah blah etc

Yet IGA are the ones already open till 8-9pm everynight.

They're just protecting their expensive prices for the crappy produce they stock.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I think that the price for produce is far below what it should be. Everyone expects that prices should be the same as when they were kids but the reality is that the cost of production has gone up and farmers are doing it tough as it is. just an opinion.

No one is exepcting things to be the same as "when they were kids".

Quite often, the price that the farmer gets for their produce doesn't pay their cost of production.

WA consumers are getting taken for a ride, argued away by the Resources Boom.

If it is a case of two economies in Australia, then the consumer in WA should be getting a far better deal than the rest - it just isn't happening via the weekly spend for the basics.

^^^I agree Diver...we all know the farmer is the last to prosper from his produce...that makes me angry..

As for IGA...I often shop at night...but do not buy IGA's top dollar items..the items I buy have to be on special or with in a few cents of the other stores, and they always have Harvey Fresh Milk which I still believe is WA based.

But what about the quality and size of a product that still goes up in price even when they put cheaper ingredients in to the item such as palm oil and then slice 20gms off a can or off a block of chocolate etc...?

They have to get you some how...

The shame about the two biggies (and to some extent IGA) running the show is that often superior local product (think deluxe south west/swan valley honey compared to watered down Capilano rubbish) is deliberately excluded and lesser quality produce is wastefully trucked from the east to be sold at higher prices here? WTF?? That is dumb on many levels.

Used to frequent Herdsman markets (when it was a big asbestos shed )which was awesome. It's still great but it is now a glamazon yuppy foodie store and very exxy (but great stock).

Sadly - lack of time leads me and wifey to shop at the biggies and IGA most of the time but I should stop whingening and get to growers markets like the Spud shed more regularly. Good for kids to see a more 'real' markets too rather than bling bling - "here is your ultra sterilised produce, vacuum sealed to keep all the freshness/hormons in."


Late trading is a false economy I reckon and will give the two biggies the killer blow to any form of competition. Extra penalties for employees will be used to justify higher prices (watch the prices go sky high when late nights come in).

Then when the duopoly is complete they will drop conditions/wages paid but continue to strangle prices. The CEO of Coolies will by this time bear an unmistakeable resemblance to Chancellor Palpetine and the domination will be complete. Ba ha ha ha ha![}:)]

A few weeks paying cashed up bogun prices in Perf J Muzza, and you'd be whistling a diff version of Waltzing Mytillflowedover.

I buy very very little from woolies coles or IGA as far as i am concerned they are all ****s.

I buy my fish from Freo fisher - sometimes a bit exy but fresh and tasty straight from the ocean - locally caught.
I get my veggies once a week from an Organic grower (dont like pesticides) who sells in Fremantle E shed or at city farm - again couple of dollars more but worth it imo.
Meat (little that we eat) we get organically from Freo markets as well.

If we run out then i top up the veggies from our local Vietnamese shop

We spend a lot on what we consider good produce, probably more than most but we believe that if you will spend $100 on a night out why wouldn't you forgo a night out and give your body/family something nice.
