ok turned off the lights right on time 8.30
had to turn them back on 8.32 i swear for only a couple of min ,as I lost me lighter for the candle

The whole neighbour hoods in darkness got paranoid about turning the lights back on

Wandered around in the dark stubbed my toe

found me car keys and went to get a lighter?

Im only using battery power i swear, but gotta now spray the screen to get rid of all these bugs.

that was a tough hour

I read the earth hour is akin to the indulgences the Catholic Church doled out to absolve sin.

You can be an environmental vandal for 365 days a year by leaving all the lights on at home, drive around in a big car on short trips, have the airconditioning on 24/7.... but if you turn everything off for one hour...... you have done your part. Your sins are absolved. Go back to doing whatever you like.

Never mind the power stations are still burning coal at full bore.

...burn candles instead? Millions of candles burning for an hour? Is this good for the environment?

Also, I always thought that turning off & on lights consumed nearly as much power than leaving them on for an hour? (not starting an argument here, might need some factual input from an elec engineer)

I attended a 35yr anniversary dinner for the local SES (with lights on)...I know it's not comparable to saving the earth, just celebrating 35yrs of saving many lives instead.

I went against the grain and turned some lights on I know it's about 'highlighting the issue' but can honestly say that this event has made them change their electricity habits? I'd say no. The biggest driver of change for most people is when they get their latest electricity bill and find out the cost/kwh went up a s*@tload since last year.

Mythbusters disproved it using a meter on different bulbs and fluoro lights both left on and turned off-on.
Apparently the myth comes from the fact it take a while for filaments to heat up (to run at 100% efficiency) but that is a matter of milliseconds. Can't remember the numbers or details but it was blown away kinda disproved
