Hi, Went to the mower repair place to fix my Ryobi Electric Whipper Snipper. 18volt model as it just did not want to work. ( battery was fully charged).
The guy at the repair shop said that i should have used the guard on the snipper as without it, the motor will eventually burn out and the line would be to long which would effect the performance of the motor? I have had the snipper for 6 months now and this is my first repair.
Has anyone heard of such a situation where not using the guard stops the motor from running ????

Yes it's true, the guard keeps line at the proper length.
You can question authority, but not the whipper snipper guy.

I made my own electric whipper a few years back using an old Eco 50cc straight shaft and put on a brushless 6kw outrunner motor powered with 53v Lithium A123 batteries. Dam thing is so powerful and fast sounds like a turbine, it was suffering gyroscopic precession which was making it a handful to use. I think my thing could spin a metre of line if it wanted but have made my own custom guard to trim the line at a good length. But yes the line length will determine how much the load is placed on the motor and how hot it gets.

It is why, if you look at the guard, there is a little blade mounted inside to trim the line.

Why would one not use the guard? MY cheap ish electric line trimmer scares the fk out of my toes with a guard and shoes on........

Anyway, yeah too long line will of course load everything up. And the little blade can be heard doing its job everytime you fire it up or bump feed line out...

Having a $109 tool repaired by a workshop is questionable economics.

Too much power is just enough

My neighbour must have decided that he didn't want to replace the nylon cord all the time and fitted his with some sort of blade.

I came home to my gas and hot water heater turned off because he cut through the gas main to his meter, and was waiting for the fire brigade and AGL to turn up to fix it...

I would recommend against being lazy and just stick with the regular setup.
