Was editing some pics I took yesterday at Ze Train when she locked up. Ctrl + Alt + Del did nothing, had to restart.

Doesn't restart.

Doesn't boot to safe mode or last known good config etc. Completely stuffed.

Last month's worth of pics not backed up. I came very close to taking the laptop outside and smashing it with a crow bar (I really hate the screen of the Toshiba A200 which is a replacement for my A70 that was stolen, about a 5 deg viewing angle).

>> I'm downloading Ubuntu dist of Linux, which if memory serves me right will boot from CD and I can connect to my external HD so at least I can save stuff before I reformat? Anyone see a problem with this approach, or an easier approach?

Off topic sort off.
I'm being forced to start running Office 2007 for my Uni studies.
Is there a way to get a copy for less than the $200 shop price?

evlPanda,

Get a mac and be done with it.

elizabethb,

there is always OpenOffice which is an Open source alternative to Microsoft Office. It works just as well as Microsoft Office and the files it produces are 100% compatible to Office 2003.

So no need to steel other peoples intellectual property.

OpenOffice or I've been using ThinkFree, that stores all your files both locally and on the web (and synchs them of course)... and saves versions. Damn it's pretty good actually.

Wow you are unlucky evil. I started running vista from release (beta actually) dislike it but not enough to be worth a reinstall of XP. So I said I wouldn't reinstall until vista dies.
Problem is the damn thing is like a canetoad, you cant kill it with a baseball bat.

So I have to put up with vistal longer

point of it is, its a hell of a lot more stable now.

Nathan campus, but I'm out of here very soon.

Used Ubuntu boot disk to check how much I had backed up on my external HD. All I've (really) lost is photos from the Train on Sunday. Not hard to replace ; ) Think I've lost an MP3 album or two, never mind.

Damn NTFS partition was locked, couldn't be bothered learning Unix command lines to unlock it so I reformatted.

I Installed Ubuntu, picked the wrong video card driver. Then the oven wouldn't turn off so I had to go out in torential rain to switch off at power board thingy, couldn't open door of power board thingy... having a great time now, everything breaking. Mayday, Mayday.

The driver issue reminded me how much a pain Ubuntu is, going the fresh XP install tonight.

Shhh! Don't tell them, they'll all want one!

That ultimate boot CD is good for when some of my unwashed friends have problems with their PC, it's got every type of disk recovery program known to man on it. Highly recommended

I looked it up but they actually want money for it.

Are there any free downloads anywhere?

No, it's always been free... Here are a couple of mirrors: (115 MB)

Linux - It just doesn't work.

That should be its motto anyway. 2nd time in a year I've given it a go, second time I've found myself spending hours trawling the web and typing in commands and finding dependent packages, just to get widescreen. Feels more like work than an OS. Actually it is worse than work, and I'm a programmer.

The first step of the Linux/Ubuntu install was a bit... poorly worded. I've just realised that I've partitioned the drive the opposite way I wanted - 95% for Ubuntu, 5% for existing installation of XP. Start again.

... solution: Goodbye Linux, Hello XP again
(and maybe a mac next time)

No experience with widescreen, but I find Fedora better than Ubuntu, I'm very happy with core8.
Except I haven't got realspeed working in it yet.

Slight change of thread but still fkn vista!

Just got a shiny new puter and installed the latest Realspeed & G7toWin.
Both working fine except that I have only managed to read from the GPS via an Aten cable once.
I have downloaded the vista driver for the cable and installed it, I'm getting the old "Com Port #1 no worky" syndrome again.
Sorry can't remember the exact error.
I went through this last year with my old computer and it took months to get it sorted.
If it works once it should work always no?

Can someone tell me what com port settings I should have or is it another problem.
I've tried changing it to #1 as the error is associated with com port #1 and I have also used the correct port #5 where it is plugged in.
I don't have the patience for this crap!!!!!!!!

My wife says that hitting it or throwing through the window wonn't fix it.
Maybe not but I would feel better
