Just spent the whole day trying to resolve why I had no internet connection on my home PC.
Checked all net work connections and cables
Installed different NIC
Could ping my router
Could get internet access through my work comp on same router.
Renewed drivers.
Ran AV in case the system was poxed (there is some irony here)

Finally went on an hour search to try and track down an error message (Error 12031)
after lots of digging found this article
social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-us/51be3571-c53f-437a-9245-d227b67c1343/no-http-or-pop3-however-https-works-and-so-does-messenger?forum=itproxpsp

It turns out that my brand new antivirus software Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet security is the biggest POS under the sun,

Not only does it refuse to allow you to let it load with any other security software, it severely F'ks up your machine. The only way to resolve the issue is to uninstall the software and reload it again.

Well I've done it, tomorow I'm going to uninstall it again and insert in the shop assistants freckle who said it was better than AVG.

What a waste of a day

We have had a Macofile at work who ranted about how crap MS is (he's not far wrong) and raved about how flash Macdonald's was in comparison proudly paraded his new toy laughing at the troglodytes on their blundows machines.

2 months later we see him with a windows machine and (none to) politely asked him about the wondermachiney.

"F'ken don't go there" as he stormed of, continual problems had led to a none to soft a deposit in the round filing cabinet.

MS may be a cumbersome pain but Mac's are far from perfect

If it got .... wheels or ones and zero's it going to give you pain

Hey Elmo

Couldn't help myself, trying not too think about IT because I look at 10 screens a day(Friday night???) BUT if I could give you an opinion (an opinion only) the security suites have a tendency to slow things down considerably and as you have found be rather stringent on connectivity. If you are looking for an alternative to AVG try Avast!. Trial for 60 days then 12 months free for personal use. It tends to nail them little suckers quite well. It is also rather lightweight which is very handy especially if you have an older pc or have vista with a bit less ram than it should.

SON OF A BEEYATCH!!

Why oh why did I work on a PC all weekend trying to resolve much the same issue Instead of goofing off and reading Seabreeze instead?? Would've had it solved friday night!

Client laptop "stopped connecting to the net last thursday"
No HTTP or applications updates but could ping outside of router to the net.

Reinstalled drivers, stopped DNS servers traced loads of similar issues on the web - did system restores* - nada zip bupkiss.

Finally (even though all the AV stuff is off) uninstalled it - bingo! Just as I was waiting for a system restore to go back to prior to the uninstall I logged onto Seabreeze and saw this thread

Now here's an interesting thing - a system restore back to factory still had the same non connection issue - a system restore back to just before I uninstalled the AV app - and now the app is not there at all... although it shows up in the programs list. WTF?!?!?!?!

Somehow the Trend Micro AV app is causing issues even through system restore???

Flummoxed and waaaay passed needing a beer.

I used to be a Mac snob... then I got sick of paying twice as much for half the performance (base models) and a VERY limited and waaaayyy overpriced range of periferals. Kinda reminds me of my othe pet hate .. Sony.

Work made the decision for me to go to PC (XP thank gawd) and have never looked back. Sony have completely bitten the dust in (alleged) Pro Audio too. Life is good.. hey that sounds familiar??

I just love the diehard Spacintosh lovers out there who said how good the 1st series of white Spac lappies were at keeping your hands warm in winter (right before the spontaniously combusted).

Been using TM for years and never had a problem.

Had massive problems with Norton causing machines to move like snails on dry concrete in summer though.

G'day all...
Some reference stuff on Firewalls and security suites.
www.matousec.com/index.html

Avast is a good AV
I currently use the family bundle option from Sunbelt Software called VIPRE - this is good (www.sunbeltsoftware.com/) and COMODO F/W (not the rest of the suite).
Gives a good load balance on older PC's.

What's really running on your PC - One of a number of products .. This mob were too good so M/S bought the company - (it is free)
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb842062.aspx
Process Explorer gives the low down on the lot - even the svchost calls..
Want to turn it off ... click Start then RUN and type in "services.msc"
Fairly intuitive from here...

JIC you are unfamiliar - www.whirlpool.net.au/ This is a forum focussed on broadband and how, who, where, etc for Oz internet access. The forums can be really fantastic - the help and skill set of the addicts is awesome. So a hardware issue or a software issue, yarda yarda.. well worth a look.

When I want to buy PC stuff I start here (example HDD search).
