I was listening to Bill Bryson's "Made in America". He notes... So I had a look on Google Maps. The northern border of Wyoming is about 549.88 km wide and the southern border 586.36 km.
Looking at that map it seems the problem is that all the water is collecting in the top left corner. That will be making the earth soggy and it will sag a bit. The border just appears to be a bit shorter because of the saggy bits, no bendy magic map stuff needed.
