I was tidying up a surfboard for sale and found the zip sliders on the board bag were jammed with corrosion. I was using hot soapy water to wash the wax residue off the board so I soaked the sliders in the water and they freed up nicely.
I did the same thing to an old board bag that had been corroded up for about a year and it is now easy to slide.
The sliders will probably corrode again pretty quickly but it's easy enough to give them a wash from time to time. That's better than buying a new bag or putting on new zips or sliders.
I have read on the internet that vinegar works well. Apparently urine also works.
I don't know of anything that will prevent the corrosion. I have tried silicone lube and that has no effect.

Boiling water straight from kettle works. To prevent it, vas?

Steep in vinegar overnight and pick the grunge out with a needle. Works a treat.

+1 for the Vinegar. I have had to soak up to 2 days to get it moving, but does work eventually.

It could be the great "it's to save the zip on my bag" excuse to go out sailing more often.

Bumblings also sell a silicon spray in a light green can - usually found in the curtain track and blinds aisle.
ideal for curtain tracks, and the zippers on those clear plastic café curtain thingos.
[which is why it is found in the curtain aisle]
