I paddle an ocean ski and sea kayak and need a GPS with a decent screen (I'm getting old) - I need heart rate, location (der) and might be best if it's waterproof - :)

Most locals recommend a Garman 705 and I can get these around $450 - anyone have any better ideas?

I'm not sure if the GT-31 would be suitable. Innerwealth (nice to have when you are broke) wants something with a big navigation screen and heart rate.

Get a pacaqua midi pack, it will keep your GPS and a mobile phone safe. I'm not sure how a pack would work with the hearbeat monitor.

I have had the Garmin 705 for about a month now. I use it for cycling but also want to take it windsurfing to see how fast (or slow) I'm.

Garmin is waterproof to 1 m only (I think) so you might want to put it into an aquapac.

Also be aware it comes with only VERY BASIC maps, of you want anything decent you'll have to buy them.

Overall I'm pretty happy with it. It has a lot of excercise functions, you can configure the screens etc.
