But presumably if there was a leak the gas, being gas, wouldn't float around in the water and muck it up. Our voices might get a tad squeaky though.

so -its alright to suck it out of the ground and for you to burn it, so long as its in someone elses backyard?

NIMBY syndrome

look on the bright side though. If there was an oil leak off Sydney it would get cleaned up a lot quicker than when its in the middle of nowhere.

NIMBY is one reason why people do not worry too much for sure. Bet a few more yanks are having a look at the oil industry today than were six weeks ago!

like in the gulf of mexico
but realistically, why not . once the well is flowing, its money in the bank , and if it goes wrong it become s atax deduction for the profits from the other well.. Of course with the new SUPER MINING TAX the money you would have spent on maintainence will now go straight to the government instead of being saved for the day it all goes wrong

Err, no. Profit only becomes profit after you've spent all the money you're going to spend on expenses like maintenance. So a super profit tax could actually cause miners to spend more on maintenance.

With the advances made in "renewable energy" I beleive that we should be moving away from draging oil and gas out of the earth.

Australia is lagging behind many other countries in "clean energy" imo. I think the time and effort would be better spend on that than figuring out how much gas/oil/coal/uranium we can suck out of the earth.
