Just watching the ABC news. The RBA chief thinks the Australian dollar is too high and foreign banks are buying the Australian dollar.

Why not give everyone something like $10K or so? It would increase the money supply and thus reduce the value of the Australian dollar. It would boost many sectors of the economy that are struggling such as retail and tourism.

Domestic tourism would benefit in two ways. Firstly Australians would have money to spend on a holiday. Secondly travelling overseas would suddenly be more expensive so people would be more likely to holiday in Australia.

Australian exporters would suddenly be more competitive with a lower Australian dollar.

Doing something like this would be much fairer than the "quantitative easement" taking place in the USA or what is proposed for the EU. That sort of policy benefits the big bankers at the expense of all the people who have deposits or assets valued in American dollars. The quantative easement in America has been about the equivalent of $20K per capita. However America is still in the doldrums economically and people are really struggling.

Sure inflation would rise and plenty of money would be wasted on grog and crap but I think the upside could far outweigh the downsides.

Last time they gave money out...
They gave it to dead people and over seas backpackers as well...
Not to sure if I would like that to happen again especially with such a large amount of money

I reckon the windsurf, kitesurf, surf etc retailers would do alright - I know where I'd be headed if Jooliah gave me $10K

Whatever money is wasted this way would be a small percentage of the money wasted by quantitative easement which enriches the very few at the expense of the very many.

..because the Liberal supporters would go on about how it was bungled, when it was found that someone spent the $10k on booze and cigarettes and killed themselves, or spent the $10k on a motorbike and killed themselves... oh the humanity.

Political joking aside, there would be so much whining about who got it, who missed out because of some reason or other, why someone deserves more than someone else, why someone wants it indexed to inflation... and on and on.

What about spending that same money on infrastructure and not telling anyone? I doubt you can do the 'not telling anyone' bit though.

It would directly cause inflation, with the increase of the money supply. In effect a hidden tax on all savers.

On the other hand, crime would decrease for a month with all the junkies having some money to sniff away- the prostitutes would be loving it too.

Top signs your not getting $10,000 from the government.

#5 The ATO sends you an amended annual return bcos you didn't declare $0.23 interest from a bank account.

#4 Wayne Swan made another youporn video.

#3 You earn more than $10 a year.

#2 The government just blew it all on pink batts.

And the #1 sign your not getting $10,000 from the government... Juliar said you will.

Why don't you ring the Treasurer and put your genius to him? I'm sure he'll respond "yeah, awesome, why didn't I think of that! Your bar counter economics ideas trump my decades of detailed study and decades of experience of actually running a country's economy."

John Howard was a dead set conniving old coot who swingled the Aussie voters from day one. One con job after another, just to keep his mangy old coit on the Prime Ministers seat.
As the saying goes “he got Nuthin” and booted out of his seat at federal election. What a boof head.
If he had stepped aside when the pressure to do so was applied, then I guess Pete or one of the more reliable would be in the chair now, doing a half decent job of it.
Ether side would have spent, no mater what. Its far better to keep the economy trickling, than to drop back into a stall mode. Stall mode are way more expensive to get rolling than any paltry modest hand outs.

^^^ The Howard gov't was very conservative & didn't spend anywhere near enough on education, hospitals etc., instead they hoarded. As mentioned, the Labour gov't spent the savings.

We're probably just lucky it panned out that way in all honesty, other way around & we'd be a lot worse off imo.

Tried something like that in the US but only $500 turned out it was like giving $500 directly to China, fools went out and bought big screen TV's and electronic chinese junk or else paid down debt which was a loss considering the idea was to try and stimulate the economy.

Yeah... What's your point. Say everyone went out and purchased a Chinese made TV,
That's 300 million TVs that need importing to the USA, that 300 million TVs needing to be unloaded by American employees, that's 300 million TVs needing transport to shops by US drivers, that's 300 million TVs brings sold in US shops.... I'm sure you get the picture.

10K?

Great, I could do with some new t!ts.. but would probably go to Bali and get it done.

Cheaper and you get a holiday (Oz is waaayyy too exxy).

Actually, I think I would rather have a parcel of land up north where I use my mates in govt to get the traditional owners of the land thrown off (along with any green idiots interested in unique heritage).

Then I'd use imported cheap overseas labour to dig the shizzle up, flog it off to China (waayyy too cheap) and buy Chinese manufactured product online (Oz waaayyy too exxy).

Yep, that's the best plan. Has been working very well for Oz... to this point.

Mate I am gonna get the BIGGEST funbags you have ever seen when my plan takes off!
