uncensored.co.nz/2011/12/06/14000-abandoned-wind-turbines-in-the-usa/

The US experience with wind farms has left over 14,000 wind turbines abandoned and slowly decaying, in most instances the turbines are just left as symbols of a dying Climate Religion, nowhere have the Green Environmentalists appeared to clear up their mess or even complain about the abandoned wind farms.

I remember reading there was 18 million vacant homes (some new just built) in the USA at the hight of the GFC. That's probably more vacant homes than homeless people. Perfect example of the failure of the market ideology.

It is a strange place the ol' US of A. I went to detroit in 2003 and at the time could not get over the amount of abandoned homes...i'm talking whole suburbs. I'm not talking little houses here either, i'm talking huge 5 bedroom homes on at least quater acre blocks; you could tell that at one stage these were magnificent neighbourhoods.

Detroit is somewhat of a odd case though as the decimation of the once mighty motoring/manufacturing industry has irreparably destroyed that city. I still remember leaving a bullet proof KFC (and I mean 100% bullet proof, IE meals came out a turn table thing) in a fairly poor area (by appearance), driving for 30 seconds, crossing a set of train tracks to be confronted with what I would easily estimate to be $10million dollar homes, perfectly manicured lawns/gardens, US flags flying out the front...just weird man.

I looked into it for you.

Wow... that story, repeated word for word, takes you on a tour of all the woo sites. Home of the PM33's of the world.

I did find the original though, and apparently it's more or less true.

There are 5 large abandoned wind farm sites that they mention. These were built in the 80s using rudimentary windmills compared to today's tech. They had a 20-30yr life span. That life is over.

For whatever reason (companies bought/sold/folded, weak legislation, etc) their gov't didn't force them to clean up after themselves. At the very least they should lock them and/or remove the blades, but that costs money and no one will do it unless forced.

Well, that proves it then...... Wind power is wrong and doesn't work....... global warming is a load of old cobblers........ and therefore we need nuclear powerbecause its better than anything in the world......even though we don't need to do anything because global warming is crap.........is that right!!!?????

From what I've read there was a wind power boom in the USA in the 1970s after the oils shocks. As Kiteboy has written above the wind power tech back then failed to deliver. They were inefficient and failed to deliver what they were promised. Also under the Reagan administration the quotas for renewable energy produced in America were eliminated.

Personally I feel anyone or any company who wants to produce and install wind turbines should be allowed to do so as long as their neighbours are not realistically damaged. If they are they should be compensated.

However at the same time I don't think its fair for wind power to be subsidised by the taxpayer. Subsidise encourage inefficiencies and rent seeking. For example the father of the British PM collects over one thousand pounds rent per week from wind turbines placed on his estate, care of the British tax payer. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of British children live in poverty.

Did the oil industry clean up after exxon or BP?

Are the taxpayer subsidies as big as the subsidis for the nuclear indsustry?

Can fix the problem of rent seeking by having Govt ownership rather than private ownership. The ideology of private ownership is part of the free market ideology. What we need is fair markets not free markets.

Thanks for looking that up k b. It is an ugly thing from all points of view no matter when it was initiated.

Whoever is responsible for it should be made accountable, including the pollies of the time.
