Im so f-ck-ng confused right now and sadly need some help. SO i can get back to my shark threads

Im booking a trip to hawaii In the Sept, Oct school holidays and so confused its not funny. Ive had a few pointers but still lost. As I'm booking frequent fliers, the Travel agents aren't interested and i do have access to some time share as well. BUT i can't figure out were to stay. Like the idea of visiting big name spots..

Im looking at two weeks and was thinking somewhere nice for a week, touristy like Waikiki/Honolulu but also looking for a week of quieter more local type of area. Bike riding, beach and bush walk, hanging just reading. Im going with my two young kids (9 and 12) and wife so its not a surf trip but looking to get wet at least 4 times, Or more if i can have a post out the front. (have looked at Turtle beach area and found a reasonable house on the water) But the agent said its too quiet for a family

Hawaii is just really not one spot I've found and i tend to over think things a little and want to fit in all thats worth while.

So some ideas on areas to stay and if any accommodation would also be grand. It doesn't have to be stupid value, just clean and comfy is fine.

Im sorry if i've asked this before but really wanting to book it and just under the pump and completely lost…?

If its easier I'm happy to take calls to save long messages typing. Just pm me and ill send on my number

You've lost a few pointers? You mean white ones?

Seriously though, I see you're planning your escape for the beginning of the WA shark attack season, smart move.

Go to Kauai, it's great, no where near as touristy, some great surf breaks, good kiteboarding if that is what you're interested in, and some of the most stunning hiking you could do anywhere in the world. I think I have a picture in my profile that I took while I was there. It does not do the natural beauty of the place justice.

How big is your uncles house

What about getting from Island to Island Are we talking silly prices.

Also car hires rates

Yeah Turtle beach is on our list, have a unit on the beach lined up, Really it does look like the Outrigger in town is the go

I just really like the idea of bike riding through the trees, along the beach, picking a spot..Relaxing and reading/surfing

I went in 2010, so I assume prices may have increased a little, but for our return flights from Oahu to Kauai I believe it was about $120...

Aloha JB

I've been fortunate enough to see and experience a bit of the world in the past 3 or 4 years and the last 3 weeks of my life have been the best. Hawaii is by far the best place I've been. It's the only place I've really felt at home. Youtube Israel Kamakakowi'ole & sit back and enjoy life

The islands, people, culture, history, scenery is only topped by one thing... Godiva cheesecake

Flight wise, i'd suggest breaking it up in Sydney for one night on either side. I enjoy long flights so I can catch up on tv shows but my mrs prefers to break them up. I'd imagine its probably better for the kids as well? Hawaii is just under 10hrs from Sydney and i think most flights arrive around 7am but 4 hours to sydney, a few hours at the airport and another 10 hours makes for a long day with kids and the mrs. Book exit aisle seats. I'm tall so its mandatory for me but worth it on any flight.

I'd stay somewhere like Holiday Inn on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. It's good value, great place, very central to the beach, shops, restaurants. It's not right on the beach but on the other side of the road so its much cheaper. Popular with all nationalities. Places like the Moana are pretty Japanese orientated as they cater for them quiet heavily. Since its a family holiday your stupid if you don't stay in Waikiki. If kids and mrs are happy, then dad is too!

North shore is at least an hour away, you can catch buses (take up to 3 hours) or go via various operators. It's a circus at all the big name spots but how can you not soak it all in.

All the islands, bar Niihau, are worth visiting and all are different I'm told, however 10ish days isn't enough to start visiting islands properly. Your'd need weeks on them all so your not doing them justice. Next trip though right??

Shopping is pretty good i think. There's are area for the rich (Luis Vutton etc) up near the Hilton Village but most of Waikiki is surf shops and shops that suit women. ABC store will have everything you need but can be a bit hard to find

There are so many activities. The list is endless but i've spent a bit of time in places affected by WW2 (germany, concentration camps, kokoda etc) so going to Pearl Harbour was a great but sobering experience. The yank's are very proud of their service men and women and Hawaii play's such a massive part in this.

Other tours are Kualoa Ranch (great place), sea life park dolphin swim, snorkelling, various landmarks, famous beaches, the zoo is OK, cage diving, diamond head walk (dont do a tour though) circle island tours etc. Heaps to see and do. There are some dodgy blokes on the main drag offering cheap tours but it's a time share scam. Some push it, some dont.

NFI about Sept / Oct but there were waves and people surfing everywhere. Hell, even Waikiki beach has waves that are probably better than the metro area 95% of the year lol..

Heaps of restaurants, the food is generally OK but the service is usually very good. You have to tip but IMHO they want a bit too much sometimes.

There were 13 tiger shark attacks in Hawaiian waters in 2013 so you,ll be right at home

I could go on all night, but Hawaii 5-0 has just finished downloading In short, Hawaii is fkn incredible!!

Aloha

Hawaii is great. I'd suggest a week on Oahu at Kailua Bay then head to Maui or visa/versa.

Honolulu can be fun if you get away from the tourist strip of Waikiki, lots of history and China Town is pretty cool.

Either way you'll have a good time.

And with the benefit of all your great experience here regarding "Save the Sharks" demonstrations, I think they will be hoping you will implement some of those great talents over there too.
Don't hold back jb. At 13 shark attacks in the last year, those primitive islanders need the enlightment of your knowledge and presence urgently.

In Maui, I stayed at Kauhale Makai (Village by the Sea) in the 90's and probably very much the same now. Maui Sunset next door was popular too. You will never forget Hawaii where ever you stay, but if you windsurf, Oahu and Maui are picks. Best times of my life by far in Maui for me personally.

Hi Jbshack, mate Hawaii is awesome for families.. we take our kids for a couple of weeks each year and each year we find something else to go see and do.. when we stay in Waikiki we stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Villiage.. Its a little bit pricey but for the kids there are so many pools and eateries in the complex.. we generally stay in the Alii tower and you get some pretty awesome views of the ocean and the surf break, (though not huge and generally full of the locals).. After a week there you could head up to Haleiwa... theres some preety good good bike rides around there, head over to waimea bay and even walk the waimea falls and take a swim in the rock pool at the bottom.. the turtle bay resort there is great.. i have kids a similar age to your and we always go back to Paradise cove luau, must for kids i reckon so they see the traditional dances and pig cooking, but another area i would recommend is Ko Olina.. is pretty quiet up there, the beaches are the most beautiful in thw world, if you can get near them but the have a couple of resorts in there that kids would love.. the disney resort looks good as does the ko olina resort...
hope that helps a little bit..

Actually we could learn from them. They tried culling but at least they had the intelligence to stop it once they found it didn't work

Jeez Pweeda, mate take the shark talk somewhere else. It pretty obvious you have an axe to grind but at least have the respect to do it somewhere else not just all over Seabreeze. Many folk on here post in lots of threads, not just the stirring ones. Build a bridge and go post on your Save the Surfers page

Ya gotta be kidding.
jb, have you checked this forum lately?
Just about the whole front page is full of you,.. grinding your axe.
Why should this thread be any different? Specially since it was started by you?

When you want it to stop, just stop filling the forums with your pro shark posts.
Most of the other posts and threads are only in response to that.

Best value in Waikiki is Outrigger Waikiki shores. They are serviced apartments, so they're perfect for families. Right next door is the Outrigger Reef where you can use their facilities.
It's a daggy old high rise but is beachfront in the best part of Waikiki.
If you're doing a week with tourists then you should try and avoid the typical tourists for your other week. In other words stay in Kailua or the north shore of Oahu, or the north shore of Maui (Paia, Haiku). I haven't been to the other islands so can't comment.

We looked at a few units in Turtle beach. Have decided on one recommended by another member just clarifying and need to book that.

Used frequent fliers and only could book the dates on Jetstar.. Not to happy about that one, but i guess you can't complain for the price

Everyone has been super helpful thanks..A few calls to make tomorrow to a few members to get even more info..Thanks guys

Take an empty suitcase, clothes and shoes are a quarter of the price that we pay... If you get time for some shopping go to the Ala Moana mall, not far from all the hotels in Waikiki, $10 cab fair

I thought about a few other Islands, but for the time we've go their I'm not moving all over. Its a family holiday with kids, surfing and relaxing so i think the Oahu should be fine..
