Hello All

I am brand spankers to this site and would appreciate a tip or two on the following...

...I live inland (cattle country, Murgon, South Burnett) and am a stay at home mumma-bear to two small children

In what seems like an eternity ago I used to sail with my father at Sandringham...now alas...with only 2% capacity in our nearest body of water - The Bjelkie Peterson Dam - I will have to wait a while before I buy an optomist for the children!

In the meanwhile I am looking forward to being a part of your forum and learning a thing or two!

So - my dilemma - I am in need of ANY old sail cloth be it ripped or otherwise (I would really like to sew it together to make a pretend sail which I can use to teach the children about the wind and tacking in our garden - I would also like to make a story tent near the sail as shade is very hard to come by!)

I know that sailors are kind hearted sort of blokes and lasses and thus I am wanting to ask you guys if you have any spare that you were thinking of throwing away - obviously I would be happy to pay for its postage but can't afford to pay much for it otherwise

The more colourful the better!

So - moderators, please let me know if I am not allowed to make this request - and sailors - thanks for taking the time to read this for me!

Warmest regards
Jessie

Jessie, the problem is, most new sails are fairly nondescript, clear monofilm, that deteriorates badly in sun light (U.V. cancer).
What you are after is something pre early 1990s, there's probably not a lot of those left, all mine went in the rubbish years ago.

But you may well be lucky, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Decrepit (great username by the way - a bit how I feel, but mine is due to babies devouring my brain cells!)

The sail that I want to make can be made for indoor - so I will still hold my breath!

I have been checking every couple of minutes for someone to respond - so thank you just for that!

Warmest regards
Jessie

Mother Duck, hmmm not sure this just another bait up on forums
But as Decrep also answered you then if its a bait hook, then we are both hooked Bit of trolling going on of late so a few of us are skeptical. But you put your profile up so sounds OK so far
However if your legit then here is the best thing to do.
Keep an eye on the Forums, preference is the windsurfing one. Look for the crew located in Q who talk regular and ask them for help. They are a good bunch and if they have some gear hanging about, reckon they will be only too happy to assist

Hello Mother duck,

What the guys are saying is there has been a nuisance person making ridiculous comments in here and getting the regular forum users annoyed, some of us are a bit skeptical when an unusual post is made here.

The best people to look for are the guys that sail in QLD like Hobie14T, Haircut and DavMen. Go and have a look in the Speed sailing forum to find them.

The reference to crack is in relation to your avatar picture, it can appear to look like crack cocaine, I am sure it is a very nice crystal or a whopping great diamond, so the guys are making jokes about that.

You may also want to try QLD sailing clubs as well.

I hope this helps you understand a bit more about us, we are a foolish yet kind mob, except when the wrong people make their way in and become a pain, you are not one of the bad types as far as we can see which is why I hope that my explanation has helped.

Regards GT

CRYSTAL WHAT

Image is pretty poor but looks like it belongs to the trigonal crystal system, possibly being SiO2, OR it could belong to the monoclinic crystal system and be CaSO4(OH)...

What does THIS mean Quartz or Gypsum... Not a rock, but a mineral

One thing is for sure, this is not the sort of crystal enjoyed by everyone's favourite footballer

Hello Again

Very Impressive Pugwash! Nice bit of jargon quoted there

Yes it is a poor image, just a part of a bigger pic tis all - then low res. And yep plain old SiO2, hand picked some 65km SW of Cloncurry and a fair way UG

Thanks again for the comments, I am happy to hang around long enough to 'earn my stripes'

Will keep an eye out on the suggested places, time is always a bit pressing with the littlun's but no worries, will be worth the wait if I can get the material that I am hoping for

In the meanwhile I have changed my avatar to avoid suspicion!

T'rah for now

Oooo a guessing game... 65 km SW of Cloncurry and a fair way UG...

Hmmm let me see...

Isa is ~105 km W (as crows fly) of Clonkers.

Mary Kathleen (not UG) is 50 km WSW of Clonkers.

Ernest Henry is 35 km NW of Clonkers.

Eloise is 65 km SE of Clonkers.

But I have no idea where 65 km SW of Cloncurry is Mount something

Thanks for the welcome

Much appreciated, as I feel just a little the odd one out in this forum!

And yep - Not SW - SE it is! Just another fine example of placenta-brain and baby/toddler induced sleep deprivation, which I am hazarding a guess you 'guys' may not be so familiar with

Anyway - yep Eloise it is - smarty old pantses

I would dearly LOVE to talk shop with Pugs - sadly my brain has gone rusty and I would have trouble keeping up with him I suspect!

Yep - you gotta love a good piece of machinery! I did a stint in Tassie once and the fellas down there were unbelievable on the boggers, it is pretty awesome to watch them dodging and weaving under the rill (edge of stope etc etc - see - brain just doesn't remember anything that doesn't entail everyday functioning with family!!! - a the shame of it - apparently only a temp condition)

Anyway - while I am loving chatting to you friendly bunch I am still no closer to my objective!

I tried going in to the Qld section but felt like such an idiot just 'popping' in to their conversations

"Hi - I'm MD - I want some material" - yeah right

So I didn't say anything!

Will do my best to look around - still have my hopes up

My cousin drove a bogger in Tassie. He worked at the Beckonsfield site. He new the blokes who got stuck down there. He now works at Bronze wing? Gero somewhere? I worked underground as a TA at Youami near Mt Magnet for about 4 weeks. That was pretty nuts being 8km's underground. Where I worked was about 2km's vertically from the grounds surface. But thats about the extent of my experience with wrocks. Oh and I worked on the train tunnel under the city but that was after the drill had finished boring

Greenie, agree with the underground sh1t, never was that keen going down hole to fix gear Let alone work the stuff. Too many mine deaths.
Last trip was up near Fitzroy at lead zinc mine, ugly mine profile and walls of decline only there to keep the LHD's (boggers) going in a straight line They mined it like a coal mine with pillars
Only Blue sky mining for me, and only keen driving among those Tonka trucks when that big Tilly lamp is alight soon as its gone behind the hills for the day its big bugger off til it shows next day
