Can you tell from the BOM radar if there is hail on the way?

The last storm we had here where it hailed, the arvo was warmish then about 3.30pm a cold change came though and it was really cold with massive black clouds.

Im sure it happens the same way every time but you cant be sure.

Best way to tell for sure is when it hits you on the head.

We had a hail storm a few weeks ago. On the radar it was black in the center. I never seen black be for.

The really dark reds and black on the radar are the markers of hail and/or torrential rain.

We're still stick In Sydney airport. We should have landed in Christchurch 2 hours ago. If we're lucky, we might be only 18 hours late....

They struggle to get the wind correct so you reckon they can predict something a few miles up?

I hope it works out for you without too much hassle. I got stuck in Sydney due to weather once and its surprising how little some airlines want to help if your connections are not through them.

I'm stuck in Typhoon Melor in the Philippines right now.

No hail but some of the raindrops are pretty bloody big.

+1 for black on the radar, also dark red but the weather radar has limitations.

They tend to beam out towards the horizon, rather than up. So closer in they give radar images of rain as it get close to the ground, and then because of the curvature of the earth as you get further out up to 250km or so it will only show higher altitude rain or moisture up in the clouds (neither of which might hit the ground).

Another limitation for us is the ten minute lag on the radar images on the BoM website.

So net result, a big 'ole storm close to you circulating around hail in the upper reaches of the cloud might not show up on radar until the hail is released and gets close to the ground, and if it does appear on radar it might not be for another ten minutes after hits the ground.

Black on radar and if you see the clouds coming they will look nasty with a greenish tinge to their colour.

It did work out in the end, although the airline was more of a hindrance than a help; the earliest flight we could have got from Auckland to Christchurch was 610am (after landing at 3 then clearing customs and immigration) but he airline booked us on the 920 because they thought we'd enjoy the extra time?! Spent the time on the ground changing the ticket time . . . and the destination, as they'd booked us to Dunedin. Just made the 610...

Home now, thank god. Hope Sydneyites come through as easy as we did . . .
